Notes:

1) Gospatric (the Foot of Patric) was the first recorded Lord of Samlesbury. He lived during the reign of

Henry II (1154-1189), and founded a chapel at Samelsbury. Gospatric was followed by his son, Roger de Samlesbury a.k. Rogerus fil Gospatric. ~ ~The Genealogy of the Southworths, pg. 407

Generation 3 Sir William de Samlesbury, Knight, b. ca. 1227, Samlesbury, Lancashire, Eng.; d. bef 1257 Lancashire, Eng.; marr. Avina de Notton; ISSUE: 1. Cecily 2. Elizabeth 3. Margaret

Notes:

1) William Samlesbury, living in 1246, was the grandson of Gospatric. He married Avina de (Notton?),

and they had three daughters. Avina appears to have been a window in 1257, so William must have died sometime prior. Of his three daughter, one had no children. Elizabeth, married Sir Robert de Holland, from whom are descended the Holands, the earls of Kent and Hungtingdon, the dukes of Surrey and Exeter. Half of the Samlesbury estate went to the Holands. Cecily, the other daughter married Sir John d'Ewyas who died sometime before 1311, while she was still alive. By this marriage, Sir John acquired the other moiety of the Samlesbury estate. ~The Genealogy of the Southworths, pg. 407-408

2) Sir William de Samlesbury was the son of Roger de Samlesbury, son of Gospatrick. Sir William had

three dauhgters:

  • Cecily, married John d'Ewyas de Samlesbury
  • Margaret, married Robert de Auton
  • Elizabeth, married Sir Robert de Holland of Hale.

John d'Ewyas succeeded to Samlesbury and his son Nicholas d'Ewyas whose daughter married Sir Gilbert Southworth, and carried the Samlesbury estate into that family. ~From the footnotes of The Coucher Book on Chartulary of Whalley-Abbey, Vol. I, pg. 121
