About Ruth Beall

  • Records by George Arthur Trail IV
  • Ruth Boteler was born about the year 1654, a daughter of Maj. Charles Boteler who immigrated to Maryland in 1665 and acquired great wealth as a land surveyor who groomed Col. Ninian Beall into being a land surveyor as well.Col. Ninian Beall and Charles Boteler witnessed numerous deeds for each other . Ruth Boteler Beall was an educated and literate women who often signed documents for Col. Ninian Beall because Ninian's marks show him to have had limited education. Ruth died in 1713 just before Col. Ninian Beall sold an underage Charles Boteler, son of Henry, land at a gift price. This deed to a young Charles Boteler, grandson to Maj. Charles Boteler, was the first deed Ninian Beall ever made his mark which was a rude "RB" which had to stand for Ringan Beall, the name he went by as a young man. The ancient Scottish priest St. Ninian also went by the name St. Ringan.

Ruth married Colonel Ninian Beall (1625-1717) abt 1670 in Maryland. [He was the son of Doctor James Bell (1606-1646) and Annie Marie Calvert Bell (1603-1646). - unproven]

Colonel Ninian and Ruth Polly Moore Beall had the following 11 known children: John, Capt. Charles, Ninian, Sarah, Hester, Jane, Rachel, Col. George, Mary, Thomas and Margery.

Ruth died abt 1712 in Prince Georges or Montgomery County, Maryland, USA.

Family

On 20 September 1668, 50 acres were surveyed for Ninian near Lyon's Creek which he named Bachelors Choice,[20] the name of a drinking song warning bachelors of varieties of dangerous women. This transaction must have been one of his last as a bachelor, for in 1669 he stated, "I am a married man." [2].

Ninian's known wife was named Ruth. [21] Her family and birth name is unknown. Ruth is mentioned in 1706 when Ninian and Ruth deeded enslaved Negro children "to sons Charles, Ninian, Thomas, John, George, and daughters Esther...[and] Jane. [2] An abstract of this transaction at Ninian Beall: Documents Relating to Slave Holding [22] includes daughters Mary and Rachel but not Jane.

Ruth died between Sept 9 1713 & July 16, 1714. Fielder Beall erroneously believed that Ruth died before 1704 because she did not sign the deed for a church lot in Upper Marlboro in 1704.

Proven Children of Ninian Beall and his wife Ruth

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beall-75#1669__Marriage_to_Ruth_Unknown

Assuming that Ninian Beall had no wife or children prior to Ruth, and that he married her about 1669, his children would have been born between their marriage about 1669, when Ruth was, say, aged 17, and 1692, when Ruth turned 40.

The proven children of Ninian are those named in his deeds of gift, and his will. (Plus Hannah, indicated by property records). Some writers assert that Ruth might not be the mother of all his children, but no other mother has been realistically suggested. Proposed additional children often appear in popular genealogies but have generally been disproven and are listed in Research Notes. All birth years are estimates.

  1. John Beall, 1669-1711. Named as son in 1707 deed of gift. Never married, no children.
  2. Ninian Beall, Jr, 1669-1710. Named as son in 1707 deed of gift. Named in 1717 Will. Married Elizabeth Magruder, 2 children.
  3. Charles Beall, 1673-1740. Named as son in 1707 deed of gift. Named in 1717 Will. Married Mary Wolstead and Mary Price.
  4. Jane Beall, 1678-1745. Married Archibald Edmonston. Husband named in 1707 deed of gift. 9 or more children.
  5. Rachel Beall, born 1679 Named as daughter in 1707 deed of gift. No record of husband or children.
  6. Thomas Beall. 1682-1708. Named as son in 1707 deed of gift. Never married, no children.
  7. Hannah Beall. 1687-1735. Possibly disinherited; claimed marriage 1702, actual marriage 1707 to John Deaver. Relationship established through property. Not named in 1707 deed of gift, Not named in Will. 8 children.
  8. Hester/Esther Beall born 1687. Named as daughter in 1707 deed of gift. Married Joseph Belt. Children.
  9. Mary Beall, born, say, 1690. Married Andrew Hamilton, then Thomas Evans. Named as daughter in 1707 deed of gift. 6 children.
  10. Col George Beall, born 1695. Named as son in 1707 deed of gift. Named in 1717 Will. Married Elizabeth Brooke and Barbara Dent. Children.

Disputed Origins

“Ruth Polly Moore was born abt 1647 in Saint Marys, Calvert County, Maryland, United States. She was the daughter of Richard Moore (1622-1654) and Jane Pottenger Moore (1618-1654). Ruth's dad was a Calvert County lawyer.”

Some genealogies often show Ruth's birth name as Ruth Moore. Mackenzie, for instance, states that Ninian married, about 1670, Ruth Moore, daughter of Richard and Jane Moore, Richard being a barrister of St. Mary's Co., Md. [5] Following this, the Beall Genealogical News reported that in 1668 Ninian married Ruth Moore b. 1652, daughter of Richard Moore , planter and barrister of Calvert County and Jane (Foster) of Calvert County. [46]

In 1708 James Moore, age about 62 (though this is controversial, as he, in many instances, is believed to have been born ca. 1624, based on later documents which he signed, listing a lofty age), referred to "his brother Ninian Beale." [47] But no written facts confirm that Ruth's family name was Moore. Based on that record, there have been claims that Ruth was a Moore, and sister to James. That is no evidence that Moore was her surname. If Ninian Beall and James Moore were "brothers"-in-law it could have been by:

  • 1. Ninian BEALL's wife Ruth being a sister to James MOORE.
  • 2. James MOORE's wife Mary being a sister to Ninian BEALL.
  • 3. Their wives being sisters to each other, surname unknown.[4]

There have also been claims that James and Ruth were children of Richard Moore and wife Jane. There is no evidence that Richard Moore had children named James or Ruth. In 1654, [when James would have been about age 8, see above], Jane, widow of Richard Moore, stated she had sons Richard, Roger, and Timothy. [48] Since Richard and Jane had no son named James, even if Ruth was a Moore and sister to James, they would not have been children of Richard and Jane.[4]

Richard Moore is said to arrive in Maryland in 1652, with Ruth and other daughters, but no James Moore. (source?)

Otherwise, there is currently autosomal DNA evidence suggesting descendants of Ninian and Ruth are related to James Moore's descendants. Though typically less than 3 centimorgans, the autosomal DNA of Ninian and Ruth Beall Moore descendants appears on Chromosome 6, where autosomal DNA of James Moore descendants can also be found.
