About Sally Reitman (Colchamiro)
[JBA:]
Sarina Colchamiro was born in Ioannina and emigrated to America at age 10 with the rest of her family after her father died. She was named after her maternal grandmother, Sarah Eliezer, as was the custom for the second daughter. "Nina" is a typical nickname for Sarina; in America she became known as "Sally".
[from a book by JH & JK:]
Once in America, Nina went to school. As soon as she finished high school she also went to work in the hat industry, like her brothers.
The last of the siblings to marry was Nina, or Sally Colchamiro as everyone by now was calling her. She married Harry Reitman in September 1940. Harry was the son of Abraham and Gussie Rietman and was born on the 21st of November 1917 in Brooklyn. He was in the Army before they got married and right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was sent to Australia. Sally kept busy as a finisher in the Hat industry. When Harry returned from the war, he and Sally decided to go into the Dry Cleaning Business. But when this didn't work out well he decided to go to work for the New York Transit Authority as a mechanic. During this time they were living in Brooklyn and had three boys.
Albert Reitman was born on the 16th of October 1945.
Elliott Reitman was born on the 22nd of March 1947 and
David Reitman was born on the 20th of March 1950.
Harry died 2 days before Mother’s Day in May 1991, in Brooklyn. He died while watching T.V. He had a heart attack. Sally survived him for many years and passed away in 2003.
[JBA:]
My favorite memory of Aunt Sally is her dancing enthusiastically to swing music at my wedding in 1997. She must have been 87 years old at the time.
