About Samuel Graves, {Fictional}

Samuel Graves supposed father of Thomas, Mark and Samuel NEVER EXISTED

  • Marcia Wiswall Lindberg, THREE GRAVES FAMILIES: THOMAS GRAVES of Lynn, MARK GRAVES of Andover and SAMUEL GRAVES of Ipswich in The Essex Genealogist 20:204+ link to The Essex Genealogist

"Graves" was a common name In England In 1630 and Its origin has been debated but not known for certain. There were many Graves Immigrants to the new world, and at least four settled In the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Kenneth Vance Graves, Samuel Graves: 1630 Settler of Lynn ... and His Descendants (1965). This account deals with the three Essex County Graves, Thomas, Mark and Samuel. K. V. Graves claims that their father was a Samuel Graves, Sr. who came over with his sons, but there Is no evidence to support that. Thomas and Mark were perhaps brothers, but there Is no proof of a relationship to Samuel Graves of Ipswich. Thomas was the eldest of the three, according to depositions given below. Thomas named his sons "Mark, Thomas and Samuel" In that order. Mark named his sons "Abraham, Ebenezer, Mark and Thomas," In that order. Both were husbandmen by occupation. Samuel Graves of Ipswich was a "hatter" or felt-maker by occupation. He named his sons "Samuel & John. The first record found for Thomaa Graves of Lynn was on 16 December 1630, when he bought land from Joseph Farr (see below). Mark Gravn first appears on 28 August 1648 when the will of Edmund Ingalls listed a debt to Mark Graves (Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County; hereafter EQCR, 1 :146). The
first record found for Samuel Graves "of Ipswich, hatter," does not appear until his marriage "about 1656," at Boston (see account below).

The following from the Graves Family Association is based on pure imagination:

GENERATION 1

Samuel Graves (1) was born in England. He came to America about 1630, possibly as part of the Endicott group of 1628 or the Winthrop fleet of 1630. According to one account, he sailed from Southampton, England in the early spring of 1630 to New England.

He took up residence at Lynn, Mass., on the turnpike west of Floating Bridge, and the neighborhood in which he lived was called "Graves End" or "Gravesend" for more than 200 years. It is now known as Glenmere.
The first homestead was taken down in 1648 and the present one (as of 1900) erected, which has been from time to time remodeled, but still retains the appearance of old-time architecture. The house was still occupied by descendants of the original settler, and Mrs. Jane Mansfield, a granddaughter of Rand Graves, celebrated her 99th birthday in the old place on 3 Dec. 1900.

Samuel Graves was a farmer and a man of wealth. In 1635 he gave about 300 pounds for the support of the Colonial Government. He had three sons, all born in England between 1620 and 1630. (R‑201)

ANCESTRY OF SAMUEL GRAVES

The parents of Samuel Graves have not yet been found. However, it appears that he was from Norfolk or Lincolnshire, England. DNA analysis of descendants has shown that Samuel Graves was from the same family as Herbert Fletcher Graves of Lincolnshire (genealogy 428). That family lived at Chapel Hill and New York, Lincolnshire, about 8-10 miles northwest of Boston, Lincolnshire.

There has also been speculation that Samuel Graves was from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, based mainly on the supposition that Lynn, MA was named for King’s Lynn by one or more of the early settlers. That connection is now supported by the Graves DNA results. King’s Lynn is about 25 miles southeast of Boston.

Note: "Graves End" was documented in Essex County Deeds, 56:147 on 13 January 1729 by SAMUEL 3 GRAVES (Mark,2 Thomas1) as he was getting ready to leave Lynn which has nothing to do with this supposed Samuel at all.
