********************
SAMUEL , son of Martin, born probably in Braintree, England, after 1630; married (1) 24 November, 1664, Mrs. Sarah (Day) Gunn, daughter of Robert Day and Editha Stebbins, of Hartford, and widow of Nathaniel Gunn, of Hartford.
She was slain by the Indians, 19 September, 1677; he married (2) 22 March, 1679, Sarah Root, born 1660, daughter of Thomas Root, of Westfield.
He died 17 January, 1711; she died 15 January, 1718-19.
It is not known when he came to New England, nor whether he came with his brothers, Joseph and Daniel. The first record found of him in New England is that of his first marriage.
He was a farmer; resided in Hadley, Mass., where he became the owner of a four-acre home lot in 1664. He, with the twenty-three other adult inhabitants on the west side of the river, petitioned the General Court in 1667 that they might call a minister to dispense the word of God to them. In this petition they said that for the most part they had lived about six years on the west side of the river, so that Samuel may have been in Hadley several years before his marriage. In answer to this petition the present town of Hatfield was established in 1670.
Children, born in Hatfield, by first wife.
SAMUEL, born 11 April, 1669; married Hannah Dickinson.
NATHANIEL, born 4 June, 1671; m. (1) Margaret _________; (2) Mrs. Priscilla Williams.

THOMAS, born 1 October, 1681; died unmarried in Hatfield, before 12 May, 1758, when his property was distributed to the heirs of his brothers, Samuel, John and Nathaniel. He was Non Compos, and lived with different members of his father's family during his lifetime and was well cared for by them.

Research Notes ==: Samuel's farm was in Hatfield (see Wikipedia), on the west side ofthe Connecticut River, which area was originally claimed as part of the town of Hadley on the east side of the Connecticut River.<ref name="Hopkins"/> Residents of Hatfield complained that they needed their own church, because it was unreasonable to have to travel across theriver to Hadley. The town of Hadley didn't agree, but Hatfield residents withdrew from Hadley and incorporated their own town of Hatfield in 1670. This causes occasional confusion in biographies of people who lived in Hatfield before the town was incorporated, and known first asHadley. The town of Hadley was always on the east side of the river, Kellogg's farm was always on the west side of the river. Samuel Kellogg's farm didn't move, but the name of that portion of the town of Hadley was changed to Hatfield.
