   International Genealogical Index Family History Library :  Source:  B. Harrison NOTES (1) Samuel Lyon came from Scotland, according to some, and from England,according to other sources.  He arrived in Philadelphia when "there werebut three cabins there".

Samuel had a family of two or three children when he came to the NewWorld and he settled in the proximity of Philadelphia. After a time (andperhaps a falling out with the local Quaker community?), Samuel and hisfamily moved to the colony of Maryland.

This is the family tradition for my branch of the Lyon family tree. Theexact date of Samuel Lyon's arrival in America is hard to fix. WilliamPenn's colony of Friends in Philadelphia began about 1681. Although theLyons of Rainford and Bickerstaff were Friends (including the baby SamuelLyon, son of John Lyon, baptised in the Quaker church on 4 July 1672).We have no solid proof that our Samuel and his family were practicingQuakers. The fact that they went to Philadelphia is significant but notconclusive. For the time being, we can only conjecture.

The real known history of Samuel Lyon's family begins with his son,Samuel Lyon II.
