Biography

Samuel, son of John and Mary Porter, was a mariner of Wenham, Massachusetts, where he owned a house and large farm. He married Hannah, daughter of William and Elizabeth Dodge of Beverly, to whom was born one child, a son, His death occured in 1660, his property being willed equally to his wife and son, but his father and his wife's father were named executors.

Date of marriage has been erroneously reported to be 1638.

He died on a trip to the Barbados. Pope's "Pioneers of Massachusetts" Page 369 "John, farmer, Roxbury, frm. Nov. 5, 1633. Rem. to Hingham p;ropr. 1635; deputy; town offic er. Rem. to Salem about 1644. Town officer many times. Sold house and land at Hing. 15 (1) 16 48. Adm. chh. 28 (2) 1649. He deposed in 1669, ae 73 years. He testified concerning Wm. Knigh t, Jan. 1672-3, ae 85 years. [So recorded.] Rem. to Wenham. Sergeant. Wife Margaret, widow o f -- Odding, memb. chh. of Rox. with him. [E.] She d. and he m. 2 Mary --, who was adm. chh . Salem 5 (3) 1644. Ch. John, Samuel, Joseph bapt. Sept. 9, 1638, Benjamin bapt. Nov. 1639, I srael bapt. Feb. 12, 1642, Mary bapt. 12 (8) 1645, Jonathan bapt. 12 (1) 1648, Sarah bapt 3 ( 4) 1649. He d. 6 Sept. 1676. Will dated 28 April, 1673, prob. 26 (7) 1676, beq. to wife Mary; son s John, Benjamin, Israel and Joseph; dau. Mary, wife of Thomas Gardner, and her 3 children; d au. Sarah; John, son of son Samuel; to Mr. Higginson and to the poor of Salem."

"A Potter-Richardson Memorial" compiled by Doreen Potter Hanna & Louise Potter Page 285 "Samuel Porter-2 (John-1), born in 1636, probably in Hingham, Massachusetts, married about 16 57, Hannah Dodge-2, 1642-1688, daughter of William-1 and Elizabeth (_____) Dodge of Beverly. He owned property in Wenham, Massachusetts, near Wenham Pond. A mariner, he died on a tri p to Barbadoes in 1660. His widow married Thomas Woodbury-3 (Humphrey-2, John-1), by whom sh e had eight children. She died in Beverly, Massachusetts, January 2, 1688.



Samuel's will - Being bound to the Barbados - dated 10 Feb 1658/59, was probated in Salem 28 Jun 1660. He left his wife Hannah one-half of his farm at Wenham during her life and the other half of his farm to his son John; after his wife's death the other half was to go to John. His father John Porter and his father-in-law William Dodge and Edmund Batter to be overseers. John Rayment helped with inventory that had a total value of £33 19 shillings. Included in the inventory were: 2 oxen, 1 cow, 15 ewes and lambs, mare, colt, 4 cloth suits, psalm book, and a silver dram cup. [From The Porter Family in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia p. 7.]

Samuel Porter died 1660. His will, dated 10th, 12 mo., 1658, "being bound to the Barbadoes."

"Imp. I give to my dearly beloved wife, Hannah Porter, the one-half of my farme during her life. Item, I give to my son, John Porter, the other half of my farme at Wenham; and after the death of my wife, the other half to returne unto him, more or less. I desire my ffather Porter, and my father-in-law, William Dodge, and Edmund Batter, to be my overseers."
