Biography

Samuel Pruitt II (son of Samuel Pruitt and Elizabeth Hawker) was born Abt. 1730 in Prince George's Co. Maryland, and died November 17, 1801 in Franklin Co. Georgia. He married Lucy Owen on 1754 in Halifax Co. Maryland.

Notes for Samuel Pruitt II:

SAMUEL PRUITT, II

(NOTE: The three youngest sons (Richard, Byrd and Levi) listed for Samuel Pruitt, II and Lucy Owen are not listed in Samuel's will and I have been told by Pruitt-Owen researchers that these three sons do not belong in this family. I found Richard, Byrd and Levi Pruitt listed as Samuel Pruitt and Lucy Owen's sons in the LDS Ancestral File, which may be in error.)

Samuel Pruitt, Jr. moved from Frederick Co. Maryland to Halifax Co. Virginia about 1762. In 1763, Samuel Prewitt received a land grant for 350 acres in Halifax County, Virginia. On January 17, 1765 he entered 400 acres Sandy Creek in Halifax Co. Virginia. September 16, 1765, a land grant for 325 acres in Halifax Co. Virginia was entered on the branches of Cand and Sandy Creeks adjoining the land of Floyd Owen & c.

September 22, 1766 Samuel Preuit was granted a patent of 350 acres on both sides of Midway River alias Birch's Creek adjoining the land of Terry. August 3, 1771 Samuel Pruit was granted a patent of 329 acres in Pittsylvania Co. Virginia on the drafts of the Lower Sandy Creek of Dan, adjoining Parish's land.

There are numerous records of Samuel Pruitt acquiring and selling land in Halifax Co. Virginia, which was later changed to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. It was thought by Pruitt-Owen researchers, that the William Owen, Samuel Pruitt sold 100 acres to, was a brother of Lucy Owen, since she was born in 1736 and this William was born 1733. This William Owen married Drusilla Echols but, so far, there is no proof that Lucy is his sister.

Samuel Pruitt was a member of the House of Burgesses in Halifax Co. Virginia in 1765.

Samuel Pruitt II was a PATRIOT, having taken oath of allegiance, and gave material aid, thus proving Revolutionary loyalty. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, (page 550, Vol 1) as having served as a Patriotic Service person from Virginia. His name also appears in a list of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia Patriots, for supplies furnished in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia during the Revolution under Commissioners of Provisions Law. (Information from Record Copy Department, Office of the Registrar General, National Society, NSDAR)

On March 18, 1782, at a Court of Claims, held at Pittsylvania Co. Virginia, for adjusting property impressed or taken for public service, Samuel was reimbursed for food taken for the Continental Army's use during the Revolutionary War. Three of his sons are listed as Revolutionary soldiers of Georgia, but are not listed in his will of 1801.

From Thomas W. Pruett:

It seems that the Pruitt’s, the Owen’s, the Hill’s and the Hawker’s, remained closely associated for a number of years. I found land transfers from Virginia in the 1700’s with the name Samuel Prewit (Prewett, Pruit, Prewitt, Pruitt, Pruett), all with his mark since he obviously couldn’t write, and John Owen, James Smallwood Owen, and William Owen, as owner or buyer or witness. His wife was Elizabeth Hawker. Then Samuel, II, married Lucy Owen in 1754, and their daughter married Bozdel Hawker in 1794, then his granddaughter married Burrell Hill in 1819. In the history of the move from Kentucky to Arkansas in 1850, the three families are mentioned by name, Pruitt, Hill, and Owen. William Pruitt Hill moved from Kentucky in 1880 to White Co. Ark. and he married Nancy Jane Pruett Owen, widow of George Owen, Jr. and daughter of Benjamin Hawker Pruett.
