DESCENDANTS OF SARAH ANN GRAVES, ZION DAVIS, AND ------ EVANS

OF NC & SC

GENERATION 1

Sarah Ann Graves (1) was born about 1740. She first married Zion Davis. He was born about 1715 in England, and probably died before 1768. He is said to have died 1797-98, but this is probably the death date for another Zion Davis who was born in the 1760’s. Although there is no proof of Zion’s death date, no records have been found for Zion after 1768 and it is assumed that he died before Sarah's second marriage in 1768. His family may have arrived from England about 1735. Sarah married second ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Evans by 1768. This family seemed to live and move back and forth across the state line between Bladen Co. and New Hanover Co., NC and Marion District, SC.

Ancestral Key to the PeeDee by Mary Belle Manning Bertha, 1978, lists: “Davis, Zion, son of Mrs Davis, married Sarah Ann Graves. Children: Josiah, Francis, Benjamin, David, William and Sarah Ann.” Marion Churches and Churchmen by Victor Bland Stanley, page 55: “In the Britton’s Neck family in addition to the families already spoken of, there was a family of Davis, which had come over with the original colony. The emigrant’s name was John, and on April 12, 1739 he received a grant in Craven County. His wife’s name is not known but it is known that he had several daughters and two sons. The sons were Richard Davis who died unmarried and Zion Davis who was born prior to his parents’ emigration. He married Sarah Ann Graves of the Neck colony. She died prior to 1790 and he died prior to 1800. They had six children. The sons were Josiah, who married Miss Rodgers and moved to Georgia; Francis, born 1766, who served in the Revolution as a private and captain and who moved to NC after the Revolution closed; David who died young, and Benjamin and William who migrated to Kentucky. The daughter, Sara Ann Davis, was born in 1763. She remained on the Neck and married James Davis, member of a Welsh family that came to the Neck at an early date and who will receive later mention. They married about 1779 and had one child Samuel born Dec. 13, 1780. James died between 1800-1810 and his wife died a few years later. They are buried on the family plantation.”

Researcher R‑1 has placed Catherine Davis who married John William Jeanneret (son of Elias G. Jeanneret) as a child of Sarah Ann Graves and Zion Davis. He was born 1784 in NC, died 1850 in Mobile, AL, and was buried in Mobile. Their children were: Elizabeth Jeanneret, b.c. 1802, Lydia Jeanneret, and Mary Jeanneret, b.c. 1805, m. Joseph Gore, d.c. 1882. However, if her birth date is close to the 1784 date of her husband, it is unlikely that Catherine was their child, since Sarah was supposedly no longer married to Zion in 1768. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑4, R‑5)
