About Sarah Skeen
Sarah Sergent was the daughter of Stephen Bryant Sergent and wife Margaret Gold. She was born about 1762 and was still alive in 1848. She married Peter Skeen on October 15, 1779.
Most of what we know about Sarah comes from her sworn statement, made on January 20, 1847, when applying for a Revolutionary War widow's pension. She married Peter in Caswell County, North Carolina and lived there for about six years. They moved to South Carolina and lived there for about 13 years. They moved to Russell County, Virginia and lived there for the rest of their lives.
He date of birth is deduced from the application, in which she swears that her age is 85. While she gives the details of her marriage to Peter in her application, she was denied a pension because no marriage license could be produced. The County Clerk for Caswell swears that there was no license on file.
She also gives a detailed description of Peter's military service in the American Revolution. Her description is accompanied by descriptions from friends and family that, for the most part, agree with her recollection of the facts.
