Halifax Herald obituary read, "CUNNINGHAM, Shirley Rae - 81, passed away quietly and peacefully at home in Rose Bay, Lunenburg Co., on June 16, 2004. Born in Kentville, she was the youngest daughter of the late Ray and Lillian Phillips, who moved to Bridgewater, where Shirley, along with her sisters, Jean and Marion "Goodie", grew up. She is survived by her husband, Hal Cunningham; sons, Joel (Janice), Mark (Kathy) and daughter, Deborah Word (Ronald); granddaughters, Sidney Cunningham, Emma Word and Marilla Word; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey, and her sisters, Jean and Marion. After graduating from high school in Bridgewater, Shirley worked in the Royal Bank in Bridgewater. After a period of time she left to work for the Children's Aid Society, serving in several regions. Later, she attended the Maritime School of Social Work and received certification in her chosen profession. She worked as a social worker in Windsor, Halifax, and finally, her hometown of Bridgewater. Since her marriage in 1954, she lived in Halifax for a short time, then Lunenburg and Rose Bay, retiring in 1986, having during that same time become the loving mother of four children. She was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg. The family have had a private burial in Harbour View Cemetery in Rose Bay. A service of thanksgiving for the life of Shirley Cunningham, and a reception following, will take place in St. John's Parish Hall in Lunenburg at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 20. Everyone is invited to attend. Rev. Irving Letto will officiate at the service with the Very Rev. Austin Munroe giving the eulogy. No flowers by request.
