About Simcock Cannon

Seen as Russell Simcock Cannon, son of William Cannon and Judith Cannon

Note:

Simcock Cannon (b. abt 1730/1735 perhaps in Amelia Co., VA; d aft 1803 GA, NC, or SC -- he was last found in the "orphan strip" also known as Walton Co., GA, which was claimed by all three of those states but eventually was given to NC.

Walton Co., GA, was disbanded and later a 2nd Walton Co. was formed).

Simcock was on an 1803 Walton Co. tax list with a family of 7 whites, no blacks. Simcock's only proved son was Russell Cannon (b c1753/54 probably Prince Edward Co., VA; d 1824, Pickens Co., SC). Russell's son was James (1785 Pendleton District, SC - 1873 Walker Co., AL).

Simcock Cannon is in the 1800 Greenville County, South Carolina census, and also the 1800 Buncombe County, North Carolina census. He does not appear in any state census in 1810, unless his name has been horribly mangled.

Early records for Simcock Cannon often give his name as Kennon. Could it have been Kennon originally,

or is this just clerical error? Simcock Cannon is in the 1800 Greenville County, South Carolina census,

and also the 1800 Buncombe County , North Carolina census.

He does not appear in any state census in 1810, unless his name has been horribly mangled. A separate "time-line" has been prepared which shows Simcock Cannon's movement from Virginia into South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina.

The first records of Simcock, besides his mother's will, was in Prince Edward County, Virginia, where he served as constable. To be eligible for this post, he had to have been at least 21 years old and own property.

He lived in Parish of Patrick, Prince Edward County, Virginia when he sold Lunenburg County, Virginia land to Willliam Davidson. Virginia research by Mary Gregg, Austin, Texas, suggest grandparents of Simcock Cannon (also Kennon) were John Simcock of Henrico County, Virginia (wife unknown), and John Cannon and Hester or Esther Pledge.

After John Cannon died, Hester married Abraham Childres. Her known children with Cannon were: John Cannon born about 1688, Henrico County, Virginia, (Married Mary Price before 1710) William Cannon born about 1690, Henrico County, Virginia, (Married Judith Woodson, who was born about 1673) Joseph Cannon born about 1692, Henrico County, Virginia. Mary Cannon born about 1694, Henrico County, Virginia, (Married William East?)

Abraham Childres and two of his step-sons, John and William (Cannon) sold land in Virginia to John Simcock of Henrico County, Virginia.

William lived in Goochland County, Virginia) NOTE:In the 1790 census of South Carolina, 2 Childres families are living on land that is located between the property of Russel Kennon and William Kennon, Greenville County, Ninety-six District, South Carolina.

PERHAPS JANE RUDD WAS A SECOND WIFE, AND SIMCOCK'S FIRST WIFE WAS INDIAN, OR PERHAPS JANE RUDD WAS A SECOND WIFE AND MOTHER ONLY OF RUSSEL. IF THE FIRST WIFE WERE INDIAN, IT WOULD EXPLAIN THE LACK OF RECORDS FOR HER CHILDREN -- THE ROYAL LAND GRANT INDICATES A HOUSEHOLD OF 12 PEOPLE, BUT ONLY 3 CAN BE ACCOUNTED FOR.[2]

The above information provided by Cecilie Gaziano. She is descended from Simcock Cannon (Kennon) and Jane Rudd. For information concerning the Kennon/Cannon family not included in this work, please contact Ms Gaziano.

She has considerable documented information concerning this family.(NOTE by Hugh Rudd. According to deed records of Franklin County, Georgia, Simcock Cannon and Russel Cannon were in Franklin County Georgia during the same time when William Rudd and Rebecca Rudd were in Franklin County, Georgia. In addition, a Jacob Cannon was a a defendant with Hortenscius Rudd, Demosthenese Rudd, John Pickard and William Blalock in a suit for eviction. The suit occurred in Gordon County, Georgia. There is little doubt that Jacob Cannon is related to the Rudd's and that the Rudd's were aware of this relationship.

On April 4th, 1770, the will of Edward McGehee of Cumberland County probated on January 28, 1771.

Devised to son John, 7 slaves and 700 acres of land in Prince Edward County joining land of Jacob McGehee, Simcock Cannon and George Walton.

The earliest known record of Simcock CANNON is from Amelia Co., VA, probably when he paid his first poll tax, in 1751. Two years later he was found in Prince Edward Co.; however, the reason is that he was in the part of Amelia Co. which became Prince Edward Co. in 1752.

The will of John RUDD II (Jane RUDD's father) filed 05 Jan 1753/54 in Chesterfield CO., VA: Mentions Jane Rudd CANNON/KENNON's son Ruscill. Simcock KENNON, son-in-law, was one of two executors.

Simcock CANNON was appointed Constable of Prince Edward County, Virginia by the court in 1756 to take the place of Daniel Davidson.

The will of Edward X (his mark) McGehee, of Cumberland County, was probated 28 Jan 1771, which devised to son John, 7 slaves and 700 acres of land in Prince Edward County (Virginia) joining land of Jacob McGehee, Simcock CANNON and George Walton;.......etc.

In 1774 Jane CANNON did not release dower when Simcock CANNON sold his Charlotte Co., VA, land; thus, she may have died by then.

In 1778 Russell CANNON of District 96, SC sold land in Prince Edward Co. VA. Appears to be land owned by Simcock CANNON.

A deed in 1786 showed Simcock had land on the Middle Fork of the Saluda River, 96 District, SC, adjoining that of William Flippo, Dennis Duff and Samuel Brummitt.

In 1787 Simcock CANNON of 96 District, SC, leased 105 acres to Russel CANNON of same district, middle fork of Saluda River.

In 1791 Simcock CANNON of Wilkes Co. GA sold to Elijah Williamson 287 acres in Franklin Co. GA. Witnessed by Russell CANNON

Simcock CANNON is in the 1800 Greenville Co., SC, census, and ALSO the 1800 Buncombe Co., NC, census. He does not appear in any state census in 1810, unless his name is horribly mangled. [3]

Simeon or Simcock CANNON (84), born about 1715, Prince Edward, VA, died after 1800, son of Wm. CANNON (88) and Judith WOODSON (89). Married Jane RUDD (85), born about 1735, daughter of John RUDD (86) and Hannah RUSSELL (87).

Simcock was born about 1725. Simcock Cannon ... He passed away about 1800.[4]
