Sir Thomas de la Pole was born circa 1378.2 He was the son of Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Katherine Wingfield.2 He married Anne Lhevey, daughter of Nicholas Lhevey.1 He died on 8 August 1420.2

MICHAEL de la Pole, son of WILLIAM de la Pole & his wife Catherine --- ([1330]-Paris 5 Sep 1389, bur Kingston-upon-Hull, Church of the Carthusians). “Michael de la Pole miles, dominus de Wingfeild” founded Kingston-upon-Hull priory, for the souls of “Walteri et Thomæ fratrum nostrorum militum, ac Blanchiæ sororis nostræ nuper uxoris…domini Richardi le Scrop…Radulphi de Nevill patris et Alesiæ matris…Johannis [de Nevill domini de Raby] et Matildæ quondam uxoris eiusdem Johannis”, by charter dated 18 Feb 1378, which names “pater noster et dominus D. Willielmus de la Pole miles, iam defunctus…Katerinæ de la Pole matris nostræ…Katerinæ consortis nostræ…domini Edmundi fratris nostri ac Michaelis filii et hæredis nostri”[282]. A charter of King Edward III confirmed the foundation of Kingston-upon-Hull priory, naming “Willielmo de la Pole seniori iam defuncto” as founder and “Michael de la Pole filius et hæres præfati Willielmi”[283]. He was summoned to parliament 20 Jan 1366, whereby he is held to have become Lord de la Pole. He was created Earl of Suffolk 6 Aug 1385. He was accused of high treason and fled the country in Dec 1387. He was attainted and all his honours forfeited 13 Feb 1388[284].

m KATHERINE Wingfield, daughter of Sir JOHN Wingfield of Wingfield, Suffolk & his wife Eleanor de Glanville ([1348]-before 1 Oct 1386, bur Kingston-upon-Hull, Church of the Carthusians). “Michael de la Pole miles, dominus de Wingfeild” founded Kingston-upon-Hull priory by charter dated 18 Feb 1378, which names “…Katerinæ consortis nostræ…domini Edmundi fratris nostri ac Michaelis filii et hæredis nostri”[285].

Michael & his wife had one child:

MICHAEL (1367 or before-Harfleur 18 Sep 1415, bur Wingfield). “Michael de la Pole miles, dominus de Wingfeild” founded Kingston-upon-Hull priory by charter dated 18 Feb 1378, which names “…Katerinæ consortis nostræ…ac Michaelis filii et hæredis nostri”[286]. He was restored to his father's dignities 28 Jan 1398, thereby succeeding as Earl of Suffolk. He died at the siege of Harfleur[287]. m (contract 1 Feb 1383, before 23 Nov 1383) CATHERINE Stafford, daughter of HUGH Stafford Earl of Stafford & his wife Philippa Beauchamp of Warwick (-8 Apr 1419, bur Wingfield). Michael & his wife had six children:

a) ISABEL (-8 Feb 1467). m (5 Feb 1403 or before) THOMAS Morley, son of ROBERT Morley & his wife Isabel --- ([1392/93]-6 Dec 1435, bur Hingham, Norfolk). He succeeded his grandfather in 1416 as Lord Morley.

b) PHILIPPA (-before 1386). m as his first wife, HUGH Burnell, son of NICHOLAS Burnell (formerly Haudlo) Lord Burnell & his wife Mary --- ([1346/47]-27 Nov 1420, bur Hales Abbey, Shropshire). He succeeded his father in 1383 as Lord Burnell.

c) MICHAEL ([1394/95]-killed in battle Agincourt 25 Oct 1415, bur [Ewelme, Oxfordshire]). He succeeded his father in 1415 as Earl of Suffolk. m (before 24 Nov 1403) ELIZABETH Mowbray, daughter of THOMAS Mowbray Duke of Norfolk & his second wife Elizabeth FitzAlan of Arundel (-after 1 Dec 1423). She became a nun at Bruisyard, Suffolk before 17 Jan 1420. Michael & his wife had three children:

i) KATHERINE (6 May 1410-). She became a nun at Bruisyard, Suffolk 9 May 1423.

Sir Miles Stapleton was the son of Sir Brian Stapleton (1379-1438), of Ingham, Sheriff of Norfolk,(a veteran of the Battle of Agincourt), by his spouse Cecily (d.1432) daughter to William 4th Lord Bardolf, of Wormegay, Norfolk. Miles Stapleton married [1] Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Simon Felbrigge, Knight of the Garter, of Felbrigg, Norfolk, by his first wife Margaret, daughter of Przemyslaw Noszak, Duke of Cieszyn and Glogau. They had no issue. He married [2] in 1438, Katherine (1416-1488, buried in Rowley Abbey, Oxfordshire), daughter and heiress to Sir Thomas de la Pole (after 1397 - 1433), son to Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk.They had two known daughters, the eldest, Elizabeth, married before March 1464, Sir William Calthorpe, Knt., of Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk. The younger daughter, Jane (or Joan), married Sir Christopher Harcourt, Knt., of Great Ashby, (Ashby Magna), Leicestershire.

Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk (1367 – 17 September 1415) was an English nobleman who supported Henry IV against Richard II. He died during the Siege of Harfleur in 1415[1].

He was a son of Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk and Katherine Wingfield, daughter of Sir John Wingfield.

His father fled abroad before being appealed of treason during the Merciless Parliament in 1388, and forfeited the title of Earl of Suffolk and the family estates. Over the next decade, Michael made vigorous attempts to recover these lands, and obtained most of them piecemeal between 1389 and 1392, following his father's death. However, his close association with the Lords Appellant, particularly the Earl of Warwick and the Duke of Gloucester prejudiced Richard II against him. He finally obtained the restoration of the earldom in January 1398.

Michael married Katherine de Stafford, daughter of Hugh de Stafford, 2nd Earl of Stafford. They were parents to at least eight children:

Alexander de la Pole (d. 1429), killed at the Battle of Jargeau

In accordance with the earlier settlement his son Richard held Marsh till his death in 1403, (fn. 32) when, his brother William having died in 1390 without male issue, (fn. 33) the manor passed to the other brother, Thomas de la Pole, though the heir male was stated to be the eldest brother, Michael Earl of Suffolk. (fn. 34) Thomas was dead by 1411, the year of the death of his widow Elizabeth, (fn. 35) and his son Thomas died in 1420 seised of the manor, (fn. 36) of which one-third was assigned to his widow Anne in dower. Thomas de la Pole, son and heir of Thomas and Anne, (fn. 38) was only three years old at the time of his father's death, and died in 1430 still a ward of the Crown. (fn. 39) Though he had a sister Katherine, at this date aged fourteen, in pursuance of the settlement of 1384, Marsh now passed to his cousin William de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk. (fn. 40) In 1437 William de la Pole and Alice were given licence to establish an almshouse at Ewelme in Oxfordshire, (fn. 41) and by 1442 the foundation, which included in its endowments the manor of Marsh, was complete. (fn. 42) A final confirmation was obtained from the earl and his wife in 1447. (fn. 43) Ewelme escaped at the Dissolution, doubtless because the king was the immediate patron of the almshouses.
