About Solomon Stix
http://thelevy.org/family%20history%20by%20bill%20coale.pdf
The name Stix was adopted in 1813 when a law was passed which forced Jews to take on a family name.
Solomon STIX, born 1788 in Demmelsdorf Bavaria, immigrated on the Louis Philippe from Le Havre arriving New York on the 22 August 1844. The handwriting on the manifest is not totally clear, but it does look like his listed name is STIX or STIKS. According to a family history written by his granddaughter Aurelia STIX RICE in 1921, Solomon took the name STIX in 1813.
