In the 1854 Denmark Census, Neils Madsen is a farmer living with his family. Said in autobiography, “This little girl with dark hair and blue eyes grew and was healthy and strong. She had come to a home not of wealth, but filled with love and faith.” Sophia’s family was Lutheran until 1854, when her parents heard the Gospel message and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 26 March 1854. Sophia was baptized 17 November 1855. three years, Sophia’s father worked in Fairfield, Iowa to earn money to buy provisions for the overland trek to Utah. Her family settled in Brigham City after arriving in Utah 9 August 1860. At fifteen, Sophia was hired to work on a dairy farm in Mantua for a C. C. Lee, who she later married 18 November 1862, in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. She and her husband settled and raised their family in Hyde Park and had ten children, but lost three in 1876 during a Diphtheria epidemic. o months after her 87th birthday. Funeral services were held in the Hyde Park Ward Chapel and she was buried in the Hyde Park Cemetery. 4
