Disputed Origins

There are unsourced claims that she was Tatacope (Tahacope) (Tatacoope), daughter of Chief Wahunsonacock Powhatan (1545–1618) and Matatishe Winanuske Nonoma Powhatan (1551–1618), and later adopted by Sir John Prevatte Taylor (1560-1623) and Huhanna Carr (1560-1613). [1]

While Powhatan did have a child by that name (Tahacope/Tatcoope), it was a son of whom nothing further is known. John Prevatte Taylor and his wife Hughanna Carr were a North Carolina couple born far later-- John was born in 1783, Hughanna about 1781.

Disputed Biography

A previous version of this profile claimed that Susan was mother of William Worsham (1594–1660).

William Worsham was the first of his surname to be documented in Virginia, but there is no evidence for the identification of his origins.

While there was a Susan, daughter of John Tayler, christened in Mersham, Kent, England 22 May 1580,[2] there is no evidence that this Susan emigrated to Virginia.

No one named "Susan Taylor" or "Susan Worsham" appears in any early Virginia records. The first mention of anyone named "Worsham" in Virginia is a land record from 1640: [3]

William and George WORSHAM patented 400 acres in Henrico Feb. 15, 1652, “200 acres lying at Olde Towne at Appomattox … and 200 acres being part of a patent granted to Wm. CLARKE, decd., May 6, 1638 and by CLARKE sold to Seth WARD who sold to William WORSHAM Nov. 2, 1640.”

A previous version of this profile claimed, citing the dreaded "Family Data Collection," that she died 15 Nov 1628, and is buried in Charles City, Charles, Virginia,[4] A Find-A-Grave memorial repeats this information.[5] However, Susan is not listed among the graves in the original cemetery. The current cemetery was not begun until 1731; the original one was on the grounds of Westover Plantation, home of the famous Byrd and Harrison families. Westover was patented in 1637 and that is the date of the earliest known gravestone. There is a list of the handful of remaining graves from the original cemetery (still visible in 1896) and she is not on it. [6]

Disputed Marriage(s)

A previous version of this profile attached two different Worsham spouses for whom there is no evidence:

  1. George Worsham (1572–1660)[citation needed]
  2. John William Worsham, Jr

Lacking evidence of their existence or relationship to this Susan Taylor, they have been detached.

Disputed Offspring

Children: [citation needed]

  1. William Worsham (1594–1660) -- NOTE: This William Worsham is the first of his surname to be on record in the southern colonies. There is no documentation found so far that identifies his parents.
  2. George Worsham (1594–1660)
