About Susannah Charity Watie
Susannah Waite was a Cherokee woman
Biography
Susannah Reece was born about 1775 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the child of Charles Reese (a Welsh man) and Nancy (Anna) Cherokee a member of the Deer Clan. [1] Susannah married Oowatie (David Watie) about 1798. They were the parents of eleven children: Dawnee, [2] Stand, Buck (Elias Boudinot), Peggie (Wakie), [3] Nancy,[4], an unnamed daughter [5] Black (Thomas), [6] Mary Ann, [7] John, [8] Elizabeth, [9] and Charles. [10] Susannah and her family were very involved with the Moravian missionaries who arrived in the Cherokee Nation about 1800. Her children Dawny, Buck, Stand, and Black all attended the mission school. Susannah was baptized September 22, 1822. [11] In April of 1831 the Moravians wrote "Sr. Susan Charity has been ill for more than two months already with consumption. Several days ago we heard that she was close to her end..." and on October 21, 1832 they wrote that they were informed "of [her] blessed homegoing." Susannah was buried at the family cemetery, (near Oothcalooga) with the service performed by Moravian Brother Henry Clauder. [12]
