About Theophilus Phillips, Sr.


Biography

Theophilus Phillips Sr. was grandson of the Reverend George Phillips (but whose exact father was unknown to Savage and Riker).2

He was the brother of Mrs. Nagle and Joseph Phillips.3 He was born in 1653 at Boston, Masachusetts. He was the son of N. N. Phillips.

Theophilus Phillips Sr. was perhaps already present in 1663 at Long Island, New York.2

He married Anna Hunt, daughter of Raph Hunt of Middleburrough and Elizabeth Jessup, circa 1669/70 at Long Island, New York.1,2,4

Theophilus Phillips Sr. lived in 1672 at Newton, Long Island, New York.2 He received an allotment of land on 5 May 1674 at Newtown, Long Island, New York.5 He was chosen to a town office in 1676 at Newton, Long Island, New York.2 He was sold land by John Furman on 14 August 1676 at Newtown, Long Island, New York.6 He was chosen as town clerk, a position he held till he died in 1677 at Newton, Long Island, New York.2 He gave land at Maspeth to Henry Maple, of island of Nevis, on 16 August 1681.7

He married Patience (?) on 15 March 1682/83; His 2nd (widower).4,8

Theophilus Phillips Sr. was witness to the will of Elizabeth Stadom, of Newtown, on 1 December 1683 at Queens County, New York.9

He married Elizabeth Townsend, daughter of John Townsend and Susannah Townsend, Mrs., on 18 February 1684; His 3rd (widower). Her 1st.8

Theophilus Phillips Sr. was witness to the will of James Way, Sr., of Mespatt Kills, on 5 October 1685 at Queens County, New York.10

He left a will on 23 January 1688 at Queens County, New York;

"Phillips, Theophilus, of Newtown. Life use of house and personal property to wife, Elizabeth, with remainder to son, Theophilus. To son, William, meadow on s. side of Long Neck, and to son Phillip part of meadow in Smith's meadow. Residue to daughters Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary, Anna, and expected child. Executors Wife and son, Theophilus. Witnesses: Daniel Phillips and George Wood. Overseers: father Townsend, brother Joseph Phillips, and brother Edward Hunt."11

He died on 26 January 1688/89 at Newtown, Long Island, New York, at age 36 years.

  • 8 i. Anna3 Phillips (113) was born on 9 Dec 1670. She died after 1689.
  • + 9 ii. Theophilus Phillips (114) was born on 15 May 1673. He married Frances _____ (526). He died in Apr 1709 at Maidenhead Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, at age 35.
  • 10 iii. William Phillips (115) was born on 25 Jun 1676. He died after 1692.
  • + 11 iv. Phillip Phillips (116) was born on 27 Dec 1678 at Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York. He married Hannah Stockton (542), daughter of Richard Stockton (2063) and Abigail (--?--) (2064), circa 1701. He married Elizabeth Hunt (15), daughter of Samuel Hunt (8) and Mary _____ (9), in 1710. He died on 30 Aug 1740 at Maidenhead, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, at age 61. His estate was probated on 3 Nov 1740.

From "genealogical & Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey" Vol. 1: Theophilus became a grantee under charter of Newtown in 1686. Was town surveyor 1678-1684, Clerk of County Court 20 years and town Marshall in 1684.
