About Theunis Gysbertz Bogaert
Ten Greats Grandfather: Theunis Gijsbertszn in den Boogaertman
Ten Greats Grandmother: Nelltjien Laurens
Theunis Gijsbertszn/Gisberszen in den Boogaertman was born in 1562 and resided in the Hoog van Middlecomp, Schoonrewoerd, near Leerdam, Province of South Holland. His first wife was Nelltjien Laurens. He is frequently mentioned in the court records of Schoonrewoerd between 1615 and 1646. It is apparent that he owned considerable property, and like others in the small village was in frequent financial difficulties. When his first wife died, her estate was divided among Theunis and their two surviving children. He was the guardian of his grandchildren, the children of his deceased son Cornelius. On December 26, 1646, he petitioned the court at Leerdam to name another guardian because of his failing eyesight and the fact that he was "an old man, over eighty years of age." Theunis died 1646 or 1647 at Schoonrewoerd, Holland.
Nelltjien Laurens (circa 1556 - circa 1645) was the mother of three children: Louw Theuniszn, Gijbert Theuniszn, and Cornelius Theunis, born circa 1609.

Theunis Gysbertszen Middagh· Memorial
· Photos · Flowers · Edit · Share Learn about sponsoring this memorial...Birth: 1617 Zuid-Holland, NetherlandsDeath: unknown Brooklyn Kings County (Brooklyn) New York, USA There is a memorial for TEUNIS GYSBERTSEN BOGAERT (33445976) who is probably the same person as this memorial, but because of the difference in the last names, which is explained in this memorial, this one was left open.
All accounts of the origins of the Middagh family in New Amsterdam begin with Aert Theunissen Middagh, who was first recorded in the Dutch settlement in 1654. When he actually arrived has never been found. There is however, another Middaugh in the New Amsterdam records during the same period, Theunis Gysbertsen Middagh. Keeping in mind that Dutch family names were in a state of flux, a search of the records of that time comes up with only one other Theunis Gysbertsen, a man with the last name of Bogaert.
On May 29, 1661, Theunis Gysbertsen from Heykoop joined the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam. His wife at the time was Sara Joris Rapalje, widow of Hans Bergen and mother of Aert Theunissen Middagh's wife, Breckje. On April 9, 1664, Aert Teunisse Middagh, also of Heykoop, joined the same church. So both men came from Heykoop (Hei-en Boeicop) in Zuid, Holland. If Theunis and Aert were not father and son, they certainly had a close relationship in New Amsterdam. About 1654, Theuniss married a widow with 8 children, he must have been a mature man, the possibility that he himself was a widower with grown children is certainly possible.
Theuniss and Aert bought land together in 1654, five years before Aert married Theuniss' step-daughter. This is another reason to believe that Theuniss and Aert were father and son. If Aert were not yet 25, the age of adulthood in New Amsterdam for men, the land purchase could have been a way of emancipating Aert in preperation for his marriage.
Also, according to John Albert Bogart's records: Tunis was a sailor before locating in New Amsterdam in 1652. He acquired a grant of one hundred acres in Bedford, Brooklyn in 1654, and in 1667, the four hundred acres of heavily wooded land formerly owned by Hans Hansen Bergen, deceased. This area included the site of the New York Naval Shipyard.
After marrying Sarah Rapalje Bergen, Theuniss became father to the six Bergen children. Theuniss and Sarah operated a sawmill and lumber business besides farming, and became influential in the affairs of Brooklyn. Sarah bore him six more Children. Their last child and only son, Gysbert Tunis Bogaert, established the large and prominent Brooklyn Branch of the descendents of Gysbert In Den Boogaertman.
Family links: Spouse: Sarah Jorise Rapalje Bogaert (1625 - 1685)
Children: Aert Theunisen Middagh (1638 - 1687)*
- Calculated relationship Burial: Unknown
