Famous big-game hunter. The son, Jeremiah, became a missionary in Kaffraria. The son, Henry, discovered the ancient gold-diggings in Matabeleland; famous elephant-hunter; explored the Hunyani and Sabi Rivers and travelled extensively in Ngamiland. Hartley in Southern Rhodesia is named after him.

In the Grahamstown journal of 1847 there is a report about a meeting which took place concerning the people in distress in Scotland and Ireland. Thomas Hartley is recorded as having made a donation to the cause.

His obituary in the Grahamstown Journal, reads: Thomas Hartley, well known to every inhabitant and generally every visitor of the British Settlement of Albany, as the Proprietor of the well known House of Accommodation in the romantic and beautiful village of Bathurst, He laboured for some time before his death under a most painful afflication which he bore with exemplary fortitude and resignation. Few men in this part of the Colony were better known or more generally esteemed than the deceased. The cheerfulness and amenity of his manners, his incessant activity and his general intelligence make his loss a subject of general regret , and will embalm his memory in the hearts of his surviving relatives and of his many friends and acquaintances. The consolation of the Bible were his support in afflication and his hope of death.
