Karren, Thomas, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company E, was born May 1, 1810, on the Isle of Man, a son of Thomas Karren and Catherine Clark. He moved to Liverpool in 1830, and joined the Church in May, 1842. He was ordained an Elder in Liverpool, emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1844, was ordained a Seventy by Jacob Gates in 1844, and became a member of 20th Quorum of Seventy at Nauvoo.

He joined the Mormon Battalion in 1846, spent the winter of 1846-1847 at Pueblo, and arrived in Great Salt Lake Valley July 29, 1847, soon after the original Pioneers came. He went back to Council Bluffs and returned with his family in 1850 to the "Valley." In 1852 he was called on a mission to the Sandwich Islands, where he was associated with George Q. Cannon and others. He returned to Lehi in 1855, and later was chosen as first counselor to Bishop David Evans, which position he held until his death which occurred April 12, 1876. Brother Karren was a faithful Latter-day Saint and was esteemed by all who knew him.

May 10, 1876 Deseret News digitized archives - Thomas Karren died April 4, [1876] in Lehi, [Utah] Thomas and Ann Karren were married just west of here in the St. John's church that was torn down. Scott put together a wonderful travel journal which lists his ancestor line up of how he is related to them, the Town where they lived along with some information on the area. Ann Ratcliff Karren ID 95248 Brown is carrying payroll request to San Francisco from the sick detachments coming in to Salt Lake from Pueblo. This sheet is for Company C, D, & E. 1st sheet has the power of attorney granted to Capt. James Brown. Sick Detach has been at Pueblo CO until July47. These are the simoleons that paid out every prior non-resident claim to the territory, and locked out all the land sharks from buying a federal land patent underneath the original pioneers.
