14 June 1603: Signature by James VI. promising that, on forfeiture of lands of Thomas Kennedy of Drummurchie, brother of the laird of Bargany, Hew Kennedie of Bennane, Walter Mure of Cloncarde and James Steuart of Brevick, guilty of burning house of Auchensoule in Carrick, etc., he shall dispone the same to John, Earl of Cassillis. 21 March 1623: Decreet of lords of council and session i.c. Dorothy Stewart, relict of Thomas Kennedie, sometime of Drummurchie, and Mr. James Inglis, minister at Daylie, her spouse, v. Thomas Kennedie of Barganie, son of deceased Gilbert Kennedie of Barganie, narrating contract, 19 August, 1597, between said Gilbert and said deceased Thomas, his brother, whereby said Gilbert warranted to said Thomas, lands of Ardrossane, to be worth annualrent of 400 merks scots, till redemption thereof by Hew, earl of Eglintoun, when other lands are to be substituted, whereby said lords decern that said Dorothy has right to make requisition of sums remaining unpaid by said Thomas Kennedie of Barganie. Family
Thomas Kennedy of Bargany is mentioned. He married Agnes, daughter of Hugh, second Earl of
Eglinton, and had issue two sons ;
- Gilbert, his eldest son, who married Janet, daughter of Andrew, Lord Ochiltree. He was killed at the skirmish of Brockloch, near Lady Corse, at Maybole, by Lord Cassillis 1 friends, on 11th December 1601.* He was succeeded by his son Thomas.
- Sir Thomas Kennedy's second son was Thomas Kennedy of Drummurchie, who slew Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean near Ayr on the 12th May 1602, in revenge for the death of his brother Gilbert. He fled to Ireland, where he lived with the Viscount of Ardes. In 1620 the estate of Bargany was sold by Thomas Kennedy, son of Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany, to Sir Thomas Hamilton of Lesterwick, with whose descendants in the female line it still remains.
