Thomas S. Pyle was the son of Edward G. and Rosannah Mary McMahan Pule. He was married to Elizabeth Goodwin, later the wife of Daniel Tanner.

Thomas and Elizabeth, along with their four children, arrived at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento on October 26, 1846. They were part of what was known as the Pyle-Whiteman (Gordon) Party.

Their children were: Edward G., Mary (Overfelt), William Henry and John Francisco Pyle.
