About Thomas Ramage

Thomas was 5 feet 6 inches tall and Hazel eyes weight at time of photo 136 pounds.Small finger on the left missing maybe due to accident while working in the coal mines..
Thomas Ramage was a Coal miner. He worked at the oakley Iron works, Fifeshire, Scotland like many of the Ramage male family members .At the age of 36 He bought his wife Margaret and family to New Zealand in 1860 from the Saline Parish and Village county of Fife Scotland on the STORM CLOUD they sailed from Greenock on the 17th January1860 and Arrived April 27th 1860 , anchored at Port Chalmers .
Their daughter Anne was born 1853 Lymphinnons Fifeshire Scotland she was 7years old when they landed in Port Chalmers , records show she died 1st July three months after they landed in New Zealand of Lung Inflammation in Mosgiel-East Taieri Dunedin .

In 1861 they bought property in North East Valley which was on two quarter acre allotments of Block Six Sections Eleven and Twelve in North East Valley Dunedin he worked in various coal mines over the years .1865 Thomas and Margaret lived in Green Island Dunedin where he worked in the coal mines while Margaret worked as char lady for a Mrs McMaster Saddle HillIn Green Island they lived their the rest of their lives he was self sufficient as he had a couple of cows for their milk and cream, couple of pigs ,hens ,and a vegetable garden .On a Saturday morning Margaret would catch the 10 am train into Dunedin for shopping.
Thomas died 22 Feb 1903 in aged 82 years the Benevolent home in Caversham Alexandra st is now Eastbourne St Dunedin .Thomas had chronic lung disease (Bronchitis) guess a legacy of his mining days and had been ill for many years this was also on his death certificate. he is in a unmarked grave in the Southern cemetery
