Served in World War I. He was despatch rider in East Africa [Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda], was taken prisoner and contracted malaria. He spent his twenty-first birthday [8 JUL 1917] in bed on a hospital ship in Durban Bay without being able to contact his family who had no idea of his whereabouts.
