About William Charles

William CHARLES, son of William Charles and Sarah Merritt, was born 1635, and died 6 AUG 1677 in Perquimans, NC.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Charles-114

William Charles was born about 1630, possibly in England, but probably in Marblehead, Massachusetts. His father, also William Charles, was in that place by 1635 when he received a grant there. His mother, Sarah Merritt, was the sister of one of the early immigrants there.

The next record of William is in the the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he is the witness to a land transaction in January 1653[1]. It is highly unlikely that he would have been allowed to witness such a document prior to his eighteenth birthday so his birth date is constrained to being no later than January 1635.

In April 1657 he is warned to keep the peace in a dispute over a building plot in the town[2].

He married Abigail Bailey in about 1660 (based on the ages of their children) before a magistrate, Mr Jeffery, in Rhode Island[3]. They went on to have seven children together[3]. The majority of these were born after the family moved to the Perquimans district of Albemarle County, Carolina.

William passed away 6 August 1677[3] in Perquimans. He must've been in his forties at the time.

William and Abigail probably went to North Carolina between 1662/3 and 1666. In 1669 William was to have surveyed for him 200 acres for transportation into North Carolina of four persons, William, Abigail, his son William, and his daughter Elizabeth. In 1694 a land warrant for 220 acres was issued to Jane Charles, William's granddaughter[7].

Abigail married[8] 2nd John Lary/Lacy on 1 Dec 1678 by the Deputy to the Duke of Albemarle. John Lacy died in 1682. They had a daughter Sarah Lacy born 15 Sep 1680 in Perquimans. Sarah may have married Christopher Denman. Abigail married 3rd Francis Tomes/Toms and had a daughter, Abigail Tomes.

Here are some interesting bits of information from deeds proving the relationships in this family: On 6 Jun 1683, Francis Toms with consent of his wife, Abigail, gave the 300 acres on the head of Yeopim Creek called “John Lacys Plantation” to William Charles. On 11 Apr 1687, Wm. Charles of Yeopim, 300 acres in possession of my brother, Daniel Charles, (formerly John Lacy’s) delivered to us by our father-in-law (step father) Francis Toms, assigned 140 acres to Francis. In the next deed Francis Toms conveys 300 acres to Daniel and Samuel Charles, brothers of William. The deeds were probably registered at the same time so they aren’t in the exact order of occurrence[9].
