About William Thomas Clapham
William arrived in NZ on the ship Birman in 1842.
He must have gone to Victoria, Australia at the time of the big gold strikes. He returned to Wellington, NZ from Melbourne in 1852 on the barque Belle Creole.
On the death of his father he took over the licence of the "Half-way House" on behalf of his mother. He held this until her death in 18965, after which it passed to his brother-in-law William Edwards.
After this William bought one of the hotels at Ngauranga called the "Ngauranga Inn". It became knows as "Claphams Inn" and was located on the Wellington side of the Ngauranga stream. There was another inn on the north side of the stream called the "Rainbow and Thistle Inn".
Claphams Inn was well known to travellers on the two main north routes, being one of the popular coach stops. The licence was retained by William until his death, when it passed to his son Thomas William.
