William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland PC (Ire), FRS (3 April 1745 – 28 May 1814) was a British statesman and diplomat. The subantarctic Auckland Islands group to the south of New Zealand, discovered in 1806, were named after him.

William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland was born in 1744.1 He was the son of Sir Robert Eden, 3rd Bt. and Mary Davison.1 He married Eleanor Elliot, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, 3rd Bt. and Agnes Dalrymple-Murray-Kynynmound, on 26 September 1776.3 He died on 28 May 1814 at Eden Farm, Beckenham, Kent, England, suddenly, from spasms.3 His will was probated on 21 July 1814.3

    He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1764 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1768 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was admitted to Mid Temple in 1769 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He was the Auditor between 1771 and 1814 at Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, London, England.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary of State for the North between 1772 and 1778.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Woodstock between 1774 and 1784.1 He held the office of a Lord of Trade between 1776 and 1782.1 In 1778 he accompanied the Earl of Carlisle, as a Commissioner, to North America.1 He held the office of Chief Secretary for Ireland between 1780 and 1782.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 23 December 1780.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dungannon [Ireland] between 1781 and 1783.1 He held the office of Joint Vice-Treasurer [Ireland] between 1783 and 1784.3 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 7 April 1783.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Heytesbury between 1784 and 1793.1 He held the office of Envoy to France between 1785 and 1787, on a special mission relating to commerce.3 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 23 March 1786.3 He held the office of Ambassador to Spain between 1787 and 1789.3 He held the office of Ambassador to the United Provinces of Netherland between 1789 and 1793.3 He was created 1st Baron Auckland [Ireland] on 18 November 1789.3 He was created 1st Baron Auckland, of West Auckland, co. Durham [Great Britain] on 22 May 1793.3 He held the office of Joint Postmaster-General between 1798 and 1804.3 He held the office of President of the Board of Trade between 1806 and 1807.3 His last will was dated 14 March 1814. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
