About William Alfred Hampshire, Snr.
NOTE: For some time William Alfred Hampshire's first name was in doubt; his gravestone only reads "W.A. Hampshire" while his Cloggs (in the care of Robert Brian David Hampshire, see "Media" secition) simply give his name as "Alfred Hampshire".
His first name was finally determined to be William based on the birth records of William jnr. and Wilfred George found in the Cape Town Archives.

NOTE: On William Alfred Hampshire's Civil Death record his full name is given as Alfred George Hampshire; it is possible that this is a clerical error, caused by a confusion between the names of W.A. and his son, Wilfred George Hampshire.

W.A. Hampshire came to the Cape en route to India as a member of the British army; he was born in Oldham, Lancashire in 1874. However, due to the outbreak of the Boer War, the British required him to stay. At the end of the Boer War, he decided to stay in South Africa, subsequently meeting and marrying Eva. W.A. and Eva met and worked with Cecil John Rhodes and followed him north to what became known as Rhodesia.
They arrived by ox wagon in Livingstone where W.A. Hampshire owned a butchery, on the opposite side of Victoria Falls Village; they eventually decided to return to Cape Town.
When World War 1 broke out in 1914 W.A. enlisted in the South African Army and saw service in France.
W.A. and Eva lived in Egham Road, Wynberg.
