This family is descended from the Lords of Vernon, in the duchy of Normandy. Their common ancestor, William de Vernon, assumed his surname from the town and district of Vernon, whereof he was sole proprietor, annon 1052. He founded and richly endowed the collegiate and parochial church of St. Mary, in Vernon, for a Dean and Secular Canons, and lies interred there, under an altar monument, whereon is his effigies.

He had two sons, Ricahrd and Walter, both who came to England with William the Conqueror. The younger, Walter obtained the Lorships of Winfleton, Nesse, Ledsame and Preston, in Cheshire; Hertwell, Adestock and Plact-Merton, in Bucks, and had a shire in his father's possessions in Normandy; but dying without issue, they descended to his elder brother, Richard de Vernon, Lord of Vernon.

• A charter confirms that "Guillelmus de Vernono cum patre suo…Hugone, Sancti Wandregisili monacho" sold land "apud Martinvillam" to Sainte-Trinité de Rouen in 1053, with the consent of "Willelmo Normannorum consule", signed by "Willelmi comitis, Mathildis comitissæ, Hugonis Vernonensis, Willelmi filii eius, Ricardi filii Gisleberti comitis…"[2232].
• "…Raberius et Willelmus de Vernone…" witnessed the charter dated 29 Aug 1060 under which "milite…Richardo…fratribus Willelmo…atque Balduino" donated "Gausberti Villa" to Chartres Saint-Père[2233].
• "Willelmus Vernonensis filius Hugonis eiusque conjux Emma" donated property at "castrum Vernonense" to Sainte-Trinité de Rouen, with the consent of "Willelmo rege Anglorum et duce Normannorum", by undated charter[2234].
• "Willelmi Vernonensi" witnessed the undated charter of "Emma mulier de Longa Villa"[2235].
• Guillaume de Vernon, his son Hugues and his wife Emma donated property to Rouen Holy Trinity, confirmed in the charter dated to [1067][2236]. [The necrology of Mont-Bourg records the death "4 Jun" of "Guillelmus de Reveriis senex"[2237].]

m EMMA, daughter of OSBERN de Crépon & his wife Emma d'Ivry . "Willelmus Vernonensis filius Hugonis eiusque conjux Emma" donated property at "castrum Vernonense" to Sainte-Trinité de Rouen, with the consent of "Willelmo rege Anglorum et duce Normannorum", by undated charter[2238]. Guillaume de Vernon, his son Hugues and his wife Emma donated property to Rouen Holy Trinity, confirmed in the charter dated to [1067][2239]. Her parentage is confirmed by a charter of Carisbrooke Priory, Isle of Wight which names “Johannem et Ricardum” as the two sons of “Willielmum filium Osberni marescallum…comitem Herefordiæ” who predeceased their father, and records that their inheritance went to “Ricardo de Rivers, nepoti prædicti Willielmi filii Osberni, tunc comiti Exoniæ”[2240].

Guillaume & his wife had three children:

a) RICHARD de Reviers (-8 Sep 1107, bur Abbey de Montebourg[2241]). His parentage is surmised by the references to his supposed brother Hugues and the latter's parents. Seigneur de Reviers, de Vernon et de Néhou in Normandy. - UNTITLED ENGLISH NOBILITY - VERNON.

b) HUGUES de Reviers (-after 1089). Guillaume de Vernon, his son Hugues and his wife Emma donated property to Rouen Holy Trinity, confirmed in the charter dated to [1067][2242]. He is assumed to be the same person as "Hugues" uncle of Baldwin de Reviers Earl of Devon named in a charter of King Henry I to the canons of Breamore[2243]. "…Hugo de Vernon…" witnessed the charter dated 1089 under which Robert III Duke of Normandy confirmed the restoration of the monastery of Saint-Vigor near Bayeux[2244].

c) ADELISA [Alice] de Reviers . The primary source which confirms her parentage and marriage has not yet been identified. Her husband's grant of land to Montebourg abbey was confirmed by her brother Richard de Reviers[2245]. m as his first wife, RICHARD de Angerville, son of ---.

A charter for Daint-Pere of Chartres, which was passed before 1061, and probably before 1053, show that at the time the family had then obtained full lordship of Vernon, together with its castle; and William of Vernon retained tis lordship until after the Norman conquest, his last recorded act being in 1077 when he made a grant to the monestary of Le Bec. It is rare indeed that the origin of a Norman territorial family of the second class can be illustrated with this particularity from the independent charters of four religious houses.
