William Sutherland, 18th Earl of Sutherland

WILLIAM SUTHERLAND, 18th Earl of Sutherland; born 28 May 1735; educated Winchester, Harrow, Enfield and U of Göttingen; Lt Roy Scots Regt, Capt 58th/56th Foot 1775, Lt-Col 1759, Lt-Col cmdg a Highland Bn 1759–63, ADC to GEORGE III with Col's rank 1763–66, rep S peer 1763–66; married 14 April 1761 Mary (married 1 June 1766), daughter and coheir of William Maxwell of Preston, Kirkcudbrightshire, by Elizabeth, daughter of William Hairstanes of Craigs, Dumfriesshire, and died 16 June 1766, just over two weeks after his wife (they were buried in one grave at Holyrood Abbey 9 Aug 1766), having had, with an elder daughter (Catherine, born 24 May 1764, died 3 Jan 1766):
