Biography

William was born c. 1586 at England. His parents are unknown.

William Holloway (a name with various spelling, as Hollowell, etc.), according to Savage, was a first settler of Taunton but removed to Boston about 1650.

William Holloway's name was on the list of those eligible for military service in Taunton in 1643 but was not on the list in 1659 for those entitled to division of land.

William became a freeman in 1644.

Caution, Three William Holloways

William Holloway, the one profiled here, was made freeman and was living at Taunton, Massachusetts, and later at Dorchester and Boston.

Torrey, "New England Marriages Prior to 1700", shows two William Holloways, both born and died around the same time:

Family

Savage names William's wife as Mary and gives four children (1-4 below):[3]

  1. Mary, born April 2, 1653
  2. William, born January 11, 1655
  3. Benjamin, born July 8, 1656
  4. Hannah, died October 31, 1653 (probably the oldest?)
  5. John, born earlier than those above and also in Taunton. He was mentioned in an answer of the General Court "to the petition of William Holloway, father of the late John Holloway, that served the Governor as Sergeant near two years" dated May 7, 1662.
  6. Malachi, also born earlier in Taunton. He petitioned Governor Andros that a new survey be made and a patent confirmation be granted to him regarding the land grant in 1662.

Emery found no evidence for a relationship with:[3]

  1. Timothy Holloway, mentioned in 1643 and 1659
  2. Samuel Holloway, who married Jane Brayman on March 26, 1666, and had children: Hannah, Samuel, Nathaniel, Esther and John.
