History:

The first written record dates from 1235. The census of 1617 states only "small town below the castle."

The castle was probably built in the second half of the 14th century by Purkart Strnad of Janovice, one of the favorite courtiers of King Wenceslas IV. In 1474 it came into the hands of the Lobkowicz family for several centuries. During WWII, the Nazi Party confiscated it, and in 1948, the State nationalised it. In 1992, the Lobkowiczes got it back. At the foot of the castle is a brewery where beer has been brewed since 1466.
