Jewish, from "Arye" (or Leib, Lion in English). "Son of Arye" would have been "Arjev" in areas where patronymics were formed in this way. "Daughter of" = Arjeva.
The name is extremely unusual. There is evidence that all "Aryevs/Arievs" have a common ancestor: LEIB (1738-1795) son of YANKEL, born in Ludza (Lutzin), Latvia. There is archival evidence that his children took the surname "Aryev."
There is evidence of migration to/from Rezekne, Jekabpils, Riga and St. Petersburg (through Krasnoye Selo). Some were transported to Ukraine in the 1840s and may have originated Aryev families there. Other families sharing the name have been found in the Ukraine. There is evidence of Ludza Arievs transported to the Ukraine in the 1840s.
Establishing the connections through the 1800s is difficult because Ludza archival records are very incomplete.
