This surname occurs in Alexander Beider's book 'A Dictionary of Jewish surnames from Galicia' and comes from the Krakow district of Poland. Galicia used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian kingdom. The Austrians gave the Jews surnames. Hartuch means a 'shawl' from the German words 'haar' (hair) and 'tuch' (cloth).
Three versions of this surname are 'Hartuch' 'Haartuch ' and 'Hertuch'. My own ancestor -Marianne Hertuch -was born about 1805 in Offenbach Germany, though I believe her father, Stefan Hertuch, probably originated in the Galicia region of Poland. Marianne emigrated to Cuba.
