The Coat of Arms was originally designed by the heraldic artist Otto Hupp (1859 - 1949). A coloured depiction of it can be found in his book at the Archives of Marburg opposite page 16, Plate 1, Number 186. A certificate dated 26 July 1514 has a fragment of a seal attached to it. It belonged to Johan Hutzerod who was a highly spiritual Deacon of Kaland of the Monastery of St. Cyriaxberg in Eschwege from 1514 - 1529. An imprint of a six-pointed star can still be seen on it today. The stars were commonly used meaning that they were prominent citizens. The red shield and silver star colours are the colours of the State of Hessen. The year 1412 may be the first authentication of the Coat of Arms. The date of presentation is 26 July 1514. An original copy of the crest is now at the State Archives of Marburg, Germany.

The first Hitzeroths to arrive in South Africa in 1785 were Johann Christoffel and Johann Heinrich. The two brothers were the first and fourth sons of Jacob Christoph Hitzeroth, the Burger Meister of Waldkappel, Hessen in Germany.

Wenn auch der Name Hütterdot(tt), Hüttenrodt, an den - allerdings entfernten - Weiler Hüttenrode bei Kloster Hayna anklingt, weisen die Akten doch auf eine Zuwanderung Heyterod aus Eisenach, wobei der Dorfname ,,Hitzerode", westlich von Eisenach, dann gelegentlich den Familiennamen in ,,Hützerodt" abwandeln ließ11. Da es in Eschwege schon die Familiennamen Hückerodt und Heuckenrodt (-rath) 1460-85 gab, mag dies für die Heyterod/Hütterodt-Umwandlung Anlaß gewesen sein. Als Lohgerber gehörten die ersten H. zur Schusterzunft, doch ein Enkel Valentins brachte es zum Superintendenten des Bezirks Rotenburg, dessen dienstliche Notizen ab 1638 eine wertvolle Quelle wurden6. Hinzu kommt noch: Pfarrer Oskar Hütteroth (1870—1950) mit seinen „Pfarrer der Reformationszeit" und weiteren pastoralgeschichtlichen Werken für Hessen. Einen weißen Steinbock im roten Feld als H. -Wappen mit Hinweisen auf einen Hersfeld-Neukirchen-Laubacher Zweig findet sich bei Knodt 12.
