The Terr-Abramowitzes, the most famous one being Yacob Terr-Abramowitz the Yiddish playwright, were not really Terrs at all. The name was adopted for the purpose of border-crossing or somesuch, such as using a preexisting document of a deceased.
Abramowitz was their real surname, Terr was adopted for a particular purpose, and was then passed down to spouses and children.
