Posted by Mike Vopni b1969. My understanding of the origin of Vopni is as follows: Jon emigrated to Canada from Iceland. Upon arrival in Canada he chose to change his last name possibly because there were so many Johson's. He chose the name of the town he grew up in to base his last name. Vopnafjordur is the name of the town. It translates as follows: Vopna = weapons Fjordur - fjord

He went with the singular version of weapons = Vopni. Therefore those with the last name Vopni means weapon in Icelandic.
