for many years i have know Eliza Dickey as Raiha Tiki Penaina but i get here and it's spelt Raihi
so i went to the Maori dictionary to see what the difference in both names and this is what i've found
raihi (loan) (noun) rice.
E kore a ia e pai ki ngā kupu a Tiati Tāmati, i te mea he iwi kai nui te Māori, ā ko te kī a Tāmati e kī nei he iwi ware, he iwi kai raihi (TW 12/10/1878:4/504). / He will never agree with Judge Thomas, because Māori are big eaters, and Thomas was saying they were a low race, a people who eat rice.
Raiha (loan) (personal name) Eliza.
…Raiha Kiwhi, nō Hōhepa kura Pikopō, he tiwhikete tuatoru… (TP 2/1900:3).
what are your views on this?
From what I remember hearing from my Grandmother, who was a grandchild of Eliza Dickey, her daughters, Anna and Fanny occassionally teased her by calling her Raihi as a form like Lizzy in English. Apparently it wasn't used if she was very close by, or had a broom in her hand, or the offender would earn a quick swipe and a "don't be cheeky"
