About @Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn, SV/PROG 1

Some claim that his parents were Arie Steyn and Anna Elizabeth Paulsen.

However, there are serious doubts about the question whether Arie Steyn is actually the father of Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn. Reasons:

1. There is no mention of this relationship in SAG 12 or in Die families van Ou Swellendam Deel 1 Steyn, or on the First Fifty years project http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g7/p7766.htm or on the outdated Steyn family website http://www.steyn.pro/genealogy/steyn/douwe/index.htm

2. Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn as he became known in South Africa, was known as Douwe Gerbens in Friesland where he originated from. In Friesland at the time, they did not use surnames, but patronymics. That means: a. His father's first name is Gerben, not Arie. b. His father would not have had the 'surname' Steyn, but his 'surname' would be derived from the first name of his father, the grandfather of Douwe Gerbens

What do you think, should we remove the historically inaccurate links between Arie Steyn / Anna Elizabeth Paulsen and @Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn ?

Anna Elizabeth Steyne, b2
On the other Geni profile for Anna Elizabeth Paulsen, it is mentioned that she and Arie Steyn married one another in 1788. That is about one hundred years later than Douwe Gerbrandt Steyn married Maria Lozee.

I remember trying to build on the Steyn side of the tree from Arie and gave up. So he stands alone on our tree. Our link is speculative and he is up as Maria Fichat's father. I got the information from Rootsweb and from the Steyn family website. The Steyn website says he does not seem to have any male descendants to carry the surname.

Thanks Kathrine. Considering your input, the Frisian use of patronymics at the time and having looked at http://www.steyn.pro/genealogy/index.htm where Arie Steyn is listed as coming to the Cape at about 1788 we can safely conclude that Arie Steyn is definitely not the father of Douwe.

One website that promotes the myth is the Greeff website: http://www.greeff.info/tng01/getperson.php?personID=I392825&tre...

But even there one notices: Arie married Anna in 1788 and Douw their supposed son died in 1700 :-)

Just shows how easily one can just copy information without looking at the information critically. I know, I have done it myself as well :-)

Private User What do you think? Can we now remove Arie from his unrightful place?
