1878 to 1890? - The story goes that Joseph's brother William & his wife Margaret emigrated to America taking their (then) four children with them and two died there so they returned home. The manifest of ship that William went to America includes a Joseph Dawson who was the same age as Joseph. There is no clear record that Joseph returned to England. Joseph had married Elizabeth (nee Teasdale) in England but the brothers travelled in advance of their wives. Joseph was born in 1844 at Friarside near Tanfield, Co. Durham which at that time was in the registration district of Lanchester, Durham. His wife Elizabeth was born in 1848 at Brass Side near Tanfield. They had a daughter called Elizabeth, born about 1869 at Waldridge Fell, Co. Durham, England.
Can anyone trace them in America from 1878 onwards please?

Unfortunately you're looking at a frequently occurring name. Any hint on "where" in USA they might have settled?
