My paternal great grandfather was George Thomas Foster. He was born in West Ham, Essex, England in 1871 and joined the Royal Navy at 18. He eventually became a gunnery officer on HMS Challenger, spending much time in Sydney, NSW. In 1907/08 he deserted and eventually surrendered and was to be shipped back to the UK. He "disappeared" leaving a wife and four children in Essex. Nothing more was ever heard from him. I have spent many hours looking for clues. I've a copy of his Navy record but cannot find a cause for his desertion. Any ideas?
