I COUNT: THE CHILDREN FROM THE 1850 CENSUS and cross reference them here against the 1840:(ages are from 1850)
(see two sequential pages of the 1850 census of LaSalle Co., IL
1) Adaline L. Hough née Fisk (27) is the wife of 2) Woodruff Hough (the two moved to Iowa)
2) Woodruff Hough (25) Child #1 in the 1840 census
3) Joseph Hough (12) Child #2 in the 1840
4) Levi Hough (21) Child #3 in the 1840
5) Rollin Hough (18) Child #4 in the 1840 > who married the Indian Catherine "Kate"
6) Lawrence Hough (3 months?) too young for 1840 census
7) Jeremiah Hough (14) Child #5 in the 1840
8) Ira Hough (16) Child #6 in the 1840
9) Amelia Hough (8) too young for 1840 census
That leave one child unaccounted for... and the parents as well...for they do not show up on the 1850 census
... but Mary "Meriam" Bacon (Mrs. Levi Fisk){in the same household} is also from VT... This suggests that Jeremiah Hough Sr. unknown wife and the mother of the the hough children above may have had <Bacon> as a maiden name
Looking at Rebecca "Roxanna" C. Hough : I would suggest that Roxanna may be the daughter of Jeremiah... (or possibly a niece)
Plus: It is known that Rebecca "Roxanna" C. Hough 's mother's maiden name was Bacon. <This draws a tie with the Fisk family again for Levi married a Bacon.
To be clear: The 1850 census as mentioned in the opening post is key. From a close analysis of the members to the two households, numbered 107 & 108 that spill over on two pages, we are introduced to connections between the <Fisk> <Hough> <Whitney> and <Bacon>.
My primary goal now is to find then maiden name of the wife of Jeremiah Hough .
In researching possible parents for the above mentioned <Bacon> family (in Vermont), I stumble across Roxanna Bacon who is said to have been from Rutland and married a Willard. The family lived and died in Putney VT. So she is not a match but is in the right place and era. \
There is a Babbuel Bacon of a prior generation in Brandon, Rutland Co.: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141489338/babbuel-bacon
key "crossroad" unions:
1) Rebecca "Roxanna" C. Hough married Norman J. Whitney
2) first name unknown Hough is the mother of Rebecca "Roxanna" C. Hough
3)Jeremiah Hough has a daughter-in-law Persis A. Hough ... This probably rules out <Whitney> as a candidate for a wife.
Just noticed:
Woodruff Hough 's mother-in-law is a <Bacon> This probably (but not necessarily) rules out <Bacon> as a candidate for his own mother...
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/94859135/woodruff-b-hough (1793-1826) was born in Lewis County Ny... The county of Lewis NY keeps on showing up. This make me wonder if this Woodruff is the uncle of Woodruff Hough. It is helpful that "Uncle" Woodruff parents are named: "son of Matthew & Barnes Hough"
Bingo!

This seems to be a well-documanted tree
Jeremiah and Matthew shared a mother in Obedience née Bernes who was previously married to a Mr. Woodruff (the way I read it). The father is Matthey Hough
BIRTH 01 MAR 1763 • Meriden, New Haven, Connecticut
DEATH 2 APR 1819 • Turin, Lewis, New York
Jeremiah is listed here as:
BIRTH 1800 • Meriden, New Haven, CT
DEATH 1845 • La Salle Co, IL (no references)
I've done some merging and editing in the Hough tree around, To me everything looks like it's pretty solid now.
And to think this all grew out of my interest in following the story of the "Half-breed outlaw" Charles Hough, outlaw
