A merge brought in Ebenezer Slawson as the father of Mercy Slawson Bishop, wife of Stephen Bishop, of Stamford. Needs discussion and investigation. I have detached for the time being.

Hello, I got the information I put on my family tree from a book about the Bishop family geneology in America. My grandmother received the book at a Bishop family reunion (probably) 40 years ago. I could check to see if it lists her father in that book.

Hello,
According to the book I used, this is what they list:
Wife's father PR: Ebenezer Slawson.

I do not know what PR: stands for other than "probably"
However, I thought that it was interesting that the book also states that Stephen Bishop's mother was Rebecca Goodyear Bishop and that she was related to the Goodyear Tire owners.

PR sounds like an abbreviation in Vital Records, usually indicating a Cemetery or church record. Do you have a link to the book ?

This is interesting, looks like Torrey has her as Mercy Pierson

And a researcher comment:

After years of searching for definite proof of Stephen Bishop's wife's name, I have finally settled on Mercy Pierson. She is the daughter of Rev. Abraham Pierson, and is named in his will as Mary. Since spelling of names was so often incorrect, it seems likely to me that "Mary" could easily have been an error, when in fact it should have been either Marcy or Mercy. I come to this conclusion for a number of reasons. First, there are members of the Pierson family in Stanford at the time. Second, there are a number of other connections between the Bishop and Pierson families. (Her neice, Susannah was married to Stephen's brother, Benjamin) Third, the names of Stephen and Mercy's children seem to mirror both Bishop and Pierson family names. Last--but by no means least--the other suggested alternative (that being that she was a Slawson) makes no sense to me whatsoever. I can find no Mercy/Marcy/Mary Slawson who could possibly be Stephen's wife.

Lifestory:

“When Mercy Pierson and her twin sister Mary were born in 1663 in Branford, Connecticut, their father, Abraham, was 47 and their mother, Abigail, was 45. She married Stephen Bishop in 1681 in Stamford, Connecticut. They had seven children in 13 years. She died as a young mother on July 15, 1696, in Stamford, Connecticut, at the age of 33.”

So she could be merged to Mercy Bishop

We need better info on Death.

Hi, Erica,
The reference book I used did use the prefix "Prob" Mercy Slawson.I assume means probably. I will be happy to change my family tree to Mary Pierson. Thank you so much for the updated information.
I do not have a link to the publication on the Bishops. It is called " A Genealogical Account Of The Family Of Bissop Or Bishop". It also says- Erst of Tillington Court, Co, Hampshire, &C.,&C. Printed for private distribution only. London 1877 Reprinted 1982 Kansa City Missouri. Also on the front page it lists Mrs. Frances P. Mercer 21 Miller Hill Dr. Lagrangeville, NY 12540 and Mrs. Fredrick A. Bishop 8822 Devon Sreet, Norfolk, Va. 23503 as cousins of William T. Bishop 4936 n. Kansaas Avenue Kansas City, Mo 64119 who is responsible for the book being reprinted. Hope this is helpful.
Best Regards,
Debbie

Hatte Blejer on hiatus evidence for Mercy Pierson.

There is no Mercy Slawson in the Slawson book.

There was a Sarah Slawson married a Bishop

Sarah Bishop Bishop

No Mary or Mercy Slawson born at Stamford, Sarah Slawson easily found

Sorry a 1/2 sister Mary Slawson b 1680, married elsewhere, again easily seen in VR.

So I’m at a loss as to how Mercy Slawson existed; no birth record, no marriage record, at a time and place with both available.
