A rare surname present currently in Ireland. It has been suggested that it is a derivation of the Huguenot name Gouvernet. In 19th century many Governeys emigrated from Ireland to USA, Canada and Australia but the name seems to have died out outside of Ireland. This was due to a predominance of female descendants and males remaining single. There are many Governeys in Ireland descendants of just one of the 19th century Governeys viz. Michael Governey (1852-1924). The above is as known to this subscriber following deep research.
