At quick glance, the FamilySearch profile you linked looks like it has the same issue -- the cited sources rely on Ancestry trees, Civil War pension files (!), etc. I'm not sure we'd want to follow it too closely.
We'd probably have to pick a central starting point, like Richard here, and then research each profile individually, trying to locate valid sources for each person and relationship. I'm already doing that with a chronically mismerged Colonial Connecticut family at the moment, but I can try to help.
Are there any journal articles about him? That's often a good way to repair Southern trees.
