What is the meaning of the Red Box between the Search box and the Share icon on the menu bar? How do I access it? Whenever the red box has a value greater than zero, if I click on it, the value reverts to zero.

It is alerting you to new items / changes in the numbers in the Drop Down Menu that appears when you click it.

You click it, drop down box is shown, now no new items.
