William Cooper is on Geni with

Children

There are a few issues

  • he has children born in the same years in England and Australia
  • he has multiple children with the same name alive at the same time

Can anyone add any information on this family?

https://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?series=NRS5313&i...

There was a William COOPER who arrived in Australia on "Westminster" in 1838
he was aged 35 and his wife was age 35 and he had 2 children with him - 1 boy and 1 girl

NSW Birth Record - father William, mother Mary A

  • 1827 William
  • 1830 Thomas
  • 1832 Eliza R
  • 1834 George
  • 1836 Caroline A
  • 1838 Salome
  • 1845 Phoebe
  • 1849 Ellen

NSW Birth Record - Father William, mother Mary

  • 1829 Margaret

NSW Death Record - George W COOPER died 1933, father Thomas, mother Mary - Mudgee - 9451/1933

According to various internet sites

William COOPER 1788-1863 and Mary Ann SHEPHERD 1799-1884
had children

  • Charles Shepherd COOPER 1830-1905 married Elizabeth DUNLAY
  • Salome COOPER 1838-1892 married Thomas GINN

Linking to other William and Mary

William Cooper, Free Settler "Westminster" 1838 1788-1863
Mary Ann Cooper 1799-1884

...

Currently on Geni we have the following 2 families

Family 1 - William Cooper 1799-1859 and Mary Ann Cooper

Family 2 - William Cooper, Free Settler "Westminster" 1838 1788-1863 and Mary Ann Cooper 1799-1884

Family 3 - William Charles Cooper 1803-1863 listed as brother of William Cooper, Free Settler "Westminster" 1838

Could everyone please load up sources for these families.

Leanne;

I have done a bit of holding response via GENI messages, am not at home where I have more detail of the Morley /Cooper marriage & family research that hadn’t been entered as yet.

Will get back to you
Brian

What is the source for William Cooper being part of either of these families ?

He has 2 conflicting birth locations - one in Murrindindi Shire in Victoria and the other in Murrindindi in New South Wales

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cooper-2541 has a William Willis COOPER with the same birth date being the son of William Willis COOPER and Deborah Jane MASON

Here is a record for the son of William and Deborah - he is mentioned on his fathers death certificate
William Willis Cooper, Jnr

I’m about to head home , but a quick look :
I believe Murrurundi is in NSW and checking BMD there William Cooper (not William Willis Cooper) noted as death 1920 with parents John & Catherine.?

Also a William Willis Cooper is noted as Convict Phoenix 1828 (maybe same .? (But worth a check if he had a son with same name?

Certainly I can’t recall that name in my research, but will check when I return home.

Brian

William Willis COOPER the Phoenix convict did have a child called William Willis COOPER - confirmed on the convicts death certificate.

James Cooper who married Kitty Errin Atkinson - Cooper
is NOT the same person as
James Henry Edward Cooper who married Cecilia Elizabeth Cooper

James and Cecilia were having children in Newcastle at the same time that James and Kitty were having children 900 km away in the Murray River Region

According to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cooper-20430
James COOPER who married Kitty LEWIS was born c1831 in Echuca, Victoria

William Willis COOPER 1846-1920 is actually William COOPER, son of John COOPER 1812-1875 and Catherine SMITH 1817-1903, he married Ellen KEEGAN (they share a grave)

William Cooper

Evening Leanne;

I have found my notes and rechecked to that appear on GENI for relationship (William Cooper & Mary Ann Morley)
I had eight family members and a couple of spouses (I’ve added those additional spouse to relative profiles): Children (8) I have are William 1827, James 1828, Thomas 1830, Eliza 1832, George 1834, Caroline 1836, Phoebe 1845 & Ellen 1849. (All born NSW BMD CH {Newcastle}?

I have today added many sources (I had collected from previous research) to the profiles within this family group

Note; James Henry Edward Cooper 1828 correct name is “James Edward Cooper” , there are multiple sources confirming that noted on his profile.

There is nothing (and I’ve rechecked today) supporting the following three profile as children of this family;
William Cooper 1841 ( I believe most likely the other family group Cooper / Shepherd marriage)
William Willis Cooper 1846 ( I note that you’ve just sorted that out to correct family)
Magaret Cooper 1829 ( this is unlikely as birth date sandwiches between births of James & Thomas “short pregnancy?” She is also not mentioned upon William senior family members his obituary copy on profile. Additionally NSW BMD shows LH {Sydney area} and would suggest another family )

The last of unaccounted profiles is that of Thomas Cooper 1830/1861 and without family: NSW BMD death shows age 28 which does not equate to birth and I believe that a simple copy and paste occurred . My suggestion here is that a merge be completed of the two and relative data to show 1830/1905 age ( there are sources noted upon one of the two files) or alternately simply detente the 1830/1861 profile.

Note; I wish to add myself as a manager of the eight Cooper profiles mentioned earlier.

Brian
PS ;
Thought would have a very quick look at relationship William Cooper & Mary Ann Shepherd and found their headstone at Greendale Uniting Church Cemetery ( ACI & Find Grave) , have placed grave image & noted their profiles as to burial detail. There are a couple of other names on headstone which can be easily read by enlarging image. I have not gone further into their relationship

Brian

Leanne;

Sorry, I indicated wrong birth code “Margaret Cooper 1829, should have been LD (St Mary’s Sydney) and did notice this morning that appears three times in BMD.

Two with a William & Mary as parents and third a William & Margaret.

Also had thought, the eight Cooper children of William Cooper & Mary Ann Morley) had The name “ Mary A” as birth mother.

Adding weight to fact Margaret Cooper is dau of some other family again

Does anyone have any sources for George Washington COOPER born 1839 died 1933

George Washington Cooper

NSW Death Records for 1933

  • George R COOPER, died Balmain, father George, mother Ann
  • George W COOPER, died Mudgee, father Thomas, mother Mary
  • George T COOPER, died Coonabrabran, father James, mother Eileen E

The George R COOPER who died in Balmain is George Rowland COOPER

The George W COOPER who died in Mudgee is George William COOPER aged 73

Leanne
Just found a little more about the duplicate Thomas Cooper within the William Cooper & Mary Ann Morley relationship and think have worked out .

Birth dates are same whilst death dates are miles apart with us certain that the 1905 date is correct and the 1861 death date calculating to age variances .

Searching about through many sites found an incorrect Thomas Cooper with that exact 1861 death date noted within family trees Ancestry showing of all things the Cooper / Morley parent connection and a marriage to Elizabeth Ann Baker. Most of the date displayed is incorrect with a marriage of a (Thomas Cooper to Mary Baker in 1845 as only correct data)

* NSW BMD 1845/595 Maitland “Thomas H Cooper” supported by Family Search & Free Settler or Felon “Thomas Humphrey Cooper”)
*Elizabeth Ann Cooper died 19 Feb 1914 (Maitland Mercury 21 Feb 1914 p2 (also confirms Thomas Humphrey Cooper as deceased husband)
*Thomas Hooper Cooper died 16 Jul 1894 ( Maitland Daily 27 Jul 1894 p1 (BMD suggests parents Thomas & Mary)
******ADDITIONAL INFO ; There is reference to Thomas on Free Settler or Felon which confirms both he and his wife Elizabeth were born Kent England . It also refers to more data available via Maitland FHS
****** Thomas Humphrey Cooped christened 12 Jul 1820 Sandhurst Kent (parents Thomas & Mary) Family Search

I am of opinion given the incorrect data that his info was sourced in part from the Ancestry Tree, that the birth dates of Thomas 1830 were sourced appropriately assuming they thought the Cooper/Morley connection were parents and /or they the other researchers had chosen wrong girl “Elizabeth Baker” within marriages search

Sorry pressed wrong button

Would now think best to remove reference to the 1861 death date and merge the two profile on GENI

William Cooper 1841/1900

More evidence supporting his being child of William & Mary Cooper from “Westminster 1838.”

His death is definitely the 1900 Gunning listing, ( meaning William Cooper of (Cooper/ Morley parents) did not die 1900.

William Cooper ( 1841/1900). married 1868 Yass. “ Eliza George b 1949
There at least ten children William 1869, Mary 1870, Eliza 1872, Alice 1874, Soloma 1875, Frederick 1877, Emmaline 1880 & Mark 1882 all born Yass and Anne 1884, Sarah 1886 & Josephine 1890 all born Tumut.
*********ALL THES BIRTHS WITHIN SAME AREA AS OTHERS IN COOPER/SHEPHERD a family group. (and the dau Soloma possibly named after her Aunt Soloma Cooper

Williams dau Emeline married 1898 Cootamundra Ambrose Russell George and is mentioned within a thank you note attached Williams death profile.

Find a Grave has entries as to William & Eliza together with others.

Just trying to understand the 2 Thomas COOPER's

1) Thomas Cooper 1830-1905
2) Thomas Cooper 1830-1861

NSW Birth record 35/1830 - Thomas COOPER, father William, mother Mary A
NSW Death record 1444/1905 - Thomas COOPER, father William, mother Mary A - Granville
NSW Death record 3763/1861 - Thomas COOPER aged 28 years - Mudgee

So we definitely have 2 Thomas COOPER's - one died in 1861 Mudgee (born c1833) and the other died in 1905 Granville

I haven't found a gravestone for either Thomas's

I haven't found an obituary for either Thomas's in trove.

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000186872510829 has 1859 William COOPER death certificate where he lists a son Thomas age 29 (born c1830)

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000186876331825 - what is the evidence that Thomas COOPER is the same Thomas COOPER who died in Granville being buried at Rookwood?

I can't see any evidence to determine which of the Thomas (died 1861 or 1905) is the son of William COOPER and Mary Ann MORLEY.

Am I missing something?

Trying to understand the William COOPERS

William Cooper, Jnr born 1827 died 1858
William Cooper born 1841 died 1900
William Cooper born 1846 died 1920 - we know he is the son of John and Catherine

1828 Australian Census

  • Cooper, William, 25, government servant, Lord Melville, 1818, protestant, brickmaker, Newcastle
  • Cooper, Mary Ann, 18, came free, Northampton, 1813, milliner, Newcastle
  • Cooper, William Jr., 2, born in the colony
  • Cooper, James Henry, 3 days, born in the colony

From that William Cooper, Jnr born 1827 is the son of William COOPER Lord Melville Convict

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000186927487850 has a William COOPER dying in Jerrara in 1900 - no parents or age listed.
https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000000176945839831&photo_id=6000000186925310895&position=0 has his age as 59 years - so was born c1841
From that we know he is NOT the same person as the son of the convict who was born in 1827
I haven't seen any evidence that he is the son of William COOPER and Mary Ann SHEPHERD - Am I missing something?

Evening Leanne;

Thomas Cooper

Yes, I had noted that the obit showed a Thomas aged 29 proving that he was alive at that time; like yourself I couldn’t identify any newspaper reports applicable to 1861 or 1905 death.

Seeing where Thomas died (Granville 1905), i speculatively searched the nearby Rookwood Cemetery burial index and found a record matching detail ( not the first time I have identified a burial site by this method).

Not for a minute, after reviewing my previous research again yesterday, do I now believe the 1861 death date to have any relevance to our profile especially as I believe that date to have been sourced from an Ancestry Tree with suspect data ( my earlier post) .

I believe that the 1861 should be deleted and both Thomas profile merged

Brian

William Cooper 1841/1900

Not sure if you’ve read my earlier message, might have been writing whilst you also writing.
I had found a marriage and children.

My belief hinges a lot upon the geographical locations of other sibling family members , nowhere near the Greater Newcastle area of the Cooper/Morley family but close to the Cooper/Shepherd family group on the far south area of NSW.
