I don't think that Sarah Thompson was in Mississippi. She seems to have been in North Carolina at the same time (and having children with) husband Bright Herring Williams at almost the same time she is listed as having been in Mississippi with William E. Barnes, Sr. Though children with Williams are immediately after those of Barnes, is it usual for someone to move EAST rather than WEST?

I am looking for the parent of Patience Floyd who was living with an Oliver Williams and two of her children with husband John Graham Floyd in 1870. I think that Patience could have been a sister of Penelope Williams Floyd (and possibly Oliver Williams) and daughter of Bright Williams, I just need to do some more research. There must be a connection for they were married into the same family at about the same time. We know we are dealing with Native lines and need to get them straight. Happy to help.

But whatever, there seems to be an issue with Sarah Thompson, I think. If she really did leave Robeson County, have children and leave them in Mississippi and come back to Robeson County, NC and have another family, the story needs to be explained in better terms than unreadable Gedcom files.

Any better ideas?

These are 2 different women. Sarah (Thompson) Barnes was born 1797 in NC and died 1888 in MS https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/52846571/sarah-barnes. I added her dates and removed Bright Williams as her spouse.

Private User, I have added information from Family Search data. The Find a Grave is wrong apparently. If we consider the following:

Confusion with Sarah Barnes. Information below set forth to help establish identities.

From https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/129699446/sarah-alford-williams

SARAH ALFORD THOMPSON was born March 23, 1806 in either Robeson or Columbus County, NC to LEMUEL THOMPSON (1756-1820) and wife PATIENCE BRIDGERS (1758-1810).

She married BRIGHT HERRING WILLIAMS (1799-1895) on March 28, 1825 in Robeson County, NC and they had nine (9) children.

SARAH died October 24, 1884 in Robeson County "Aged 78 Yrs. 7 Mos. 1 Dy" as inscribed on her headstone.

Both SARAH and BRIGHT are buried in OLD SPRING HILL CEMETERY about 1/4 mile from the HISTORIC WILLIAMS-POWELL HOUSE.

Then for Sarah Barnes:

Though Find a Grave lists Sarah, wife of William Barnes as the daughter of Limon Thompson and Patience Kitchen-Thompson, some other documents indicate a different story.

"Georgia Marriages, 1808-1967", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FW6R-7M3 : 11 January 2020), Sarah Allen in entry for William Barnes, 1819.

Sarah, wife of William Barnes may more likely be Sarah Allen, given that Hancock, GA was a stopping off place for persons headed west to Mississippi.

Sarah Allen and Sarah Thompson were two different people and living contemporaneously. They have been horribly confused. More research is needed.

The above indicates incorrectly attached parents to Sarah Allen Barnes on Find a Grave. The Thompson parents belong to Sarah Alford Thompson Williams.

10/17/2021 at 8:06 AM

They lived contemporaneously and the marriage licenses indicate that the wife of William Barnes was Sarah Allen (both of NC) married in Hancock GA.

The marriage license for Bright Herring Williams indicates his wife was Sarah Thompson. I am still searching for a source for the "Alford" name attached to her. It may be a middle name, and she could be connected to the Alford family of Alfordville in Robeson Co. NC.

The Allen surname always bothered me on the marriage record.
It also appears the parent info for both on familysearch are wrong
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LWJG-PH9 - Sarah Alford Thompson Williams - parents are listed as Charles Reavis Thompson and Sarah Alford Thompson. There is no way the mother, born in 1740 had children until 1812!

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LT5S-2DY - Sarah Thompson Barnes.

I removed Lemuel and Patience as parents for Sarah Barnes - thanks for adding the notes in her about section.

10/17/2021 at 9:46 AM

Yes, Private User, I noticed the Family Search tree is way off wrong too. More likely a grandparent if related.

I know that everyone connected wants these correct. I am connected to Sarah Williams by marriage with daughters Penelope Ophelia Floyd who married my cousin Pvt. Avery Floyd, (CSA) and to son James Berry Williams as he married my cousin Lucy N Williams I am going to try to get the other children listed shortly for Bright and Sarah.

Wonder if we can find a will for Lemuel and Patience and if that will tell anything. I think that both Find a Grave AND the family search trees need to be amended, but that is for another day. If we can get these fixed, I am going to suggest curation and locking some fields. That might help the situation. We can also reference this discussion in the "About" sections for posterity.

I am going to do some more digging for Sarah Allen. We need to find more on her lineage if possible.

Thanks, Private User and Private for assistance to try to correct these lines. It may be the best shot we have for the other platforms that profiles are on as many of the profiles are just indicated attached information without vetting for accuracy.

I have tracked the down children of Bright Herring Williams and Sarah Alford Williams A couple of children head over to Mississippi and Alabama and a number stay in Robeson County area along with Bright and Sarah.

Harriet "Hattie" Ann Peace moves to Alabama.

Giles Bright Williams moves to Mississippi.

Adding Allen parent of Sarah (Allen) Barnes.

10/17/2021 at 1:35 PM

Now, I think we are getting somewhere Private. I will see what info I can find to add to the Allen profiles.

I was able to get the connections to the Alford lines through one of the children Elizabeth Jane Alford on the Sarah Williams profile, but not sure where her middle name Alford is coming from. Will keep digging. I suspect her lines are in Alfordville, Robeson County, NC somewhere.

I know the Aford and Williams very well. Let me have a go.

Seems it is already linked to where it appears to be the right community, Loedwick Alford way back.

10/17/2021 at 3:15 PM

Yep, I think it is right too. That group is up around "Alfordville" in Robeson County in Rowland Township - about 3 miles from the town of Rowland and 10 miles from Pembroke. We all have been working the Alford lines so that I think they are shaping up. It just takes a lot to keep them straight. Thanks for the help, David. I see the new parents for Sarah Thompson. That may be the right match this time.

My uncle Francis Floyd, II married Bright William's sister Christian Floyd so I have interests in my "cousins" that way too.

That Bright name has its origins with the Meherrin upline. This is all kind of fulcrum of a big wheel of the Alford's link to the Chicamacommack Traders of the 1600s (Chicasaw Plus Accomack Fur Trade).

10/18/2021 at 7:33 AM

Daughter of Bright Williams and Sarah, Penelope Ophelia Floyd was a real force of nature. My grandmother would tell me stories about how "Miss Penny" would get things done in the community such as establish a school in one of the most rural areas of the state at the time. Penny's children were highly educated and one daughter died very young while teaching in Oklahoma, another was a professor at the University of Florida.

I think she is cloaked. You are lukewarm.

5/4/2022 at 10:43 AM

Looks like a bad merge into William E. Barnes, Sr. . These profiles need more attention. Will have to check back - tied up in a project right now. Notes are above. Two contemporaneous Sarahs who have been confused on several platforms.

5/4/2022 at 7:46 PM

Merged to Master profile Sarah Barnes and removed disputed parents.

5/4/2022 at 9:49 PM

Thanks so much, Erica Howton. Maybe Find a Grave and Family Search can be fixed from these. It is good if we can be "in the know." I will see what I can do on those. May take a while.

I am going to work on children of William E. Barnes, Sr. and see if we can MP him also. I think more research is needed on them, but those listed in the "about" may be correct. If anyone has additional info, please respond.

Will for Lemuel Thompson dated 26 Jul 1820 (North Carolina, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1665-1998 for Lemuel Thompson, Robeson Wills, 1787-1865 p228) shows daughter as Sarah BARNES.

5/5/2022 at 4:12 AM

Thanks Robert W Thompson Will pull it up and attach. Was she the Sarah Barnes who moved to Mississippi?

5/5/2022 at 5:07 AM

I believe the reference would be the one who came to Mississippi, but am cautious now seeing these comments. Others referenced in the will are Angus Brother, Edward Wilkison Son, Pateince Thompson Wife, Nathan Thompson Son, Daniel Thompson Son, Sarah Barnes Daughter, Rose Slave, Pink Slave, and Nancy Thompson Daughter.

I think this should get you there:

I wonder if there are more than even 2 Sarahs who have been confused. This may take a long time. I found a Lemuel Thompson on Family Search, but not the one you mentioned.

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LDT5-P96

If you can believe Family Search, this Lemuel had a sister named Sarah Thompson and a daughter named Sarah Thompson. Not sure he is even connected. But it is another one to look at.
