It seems there is a strong chance that this John Sykes was the son of one Richard and Rittah Sykes per the Bible record of his brother-in-law, Rev. Beverly Booth (1753--1833). This Sykes family did live in Prince George County, but because of record losses it is barely known from any other source. If this is the case, then John Sykes and Elizabeth Sykes Booth (Rev. Beverly Booth's first wife) were siblings who married siblings (Lucy Booth Sykes and Rev. Beverly Booth), a not uncommon occurrence in the past. Richard Sykes, Sr. died and his widow Rittah remarried to a Norris by at least 1788 (See Prince George Deed Book 1787-92:143). Rittah Norris, according to the Booth Bible, died by 9 Jul 1825 or 1826. The Bible identifies some others of Richard and Rittah's children: explicitly Tabitha Sykes b. 1 Feb 1775 (called the daughter of Rittah Sykes with no mention of Richard). But also suggested was a younger Richard Sykes who married someone named Elizabeth and died around 31 Oct 1797. This is probably Richard Sykes, Jr. and three children of his are listed in the Bible: Drewry Sykes (b. 16 Jan 1783), Eli Sykes (b. 21 Mar 1785) and Benjamin Sykes (b. 22 Oct 1790). The birth dates of Robert and James Sykes, children of John Sykes and Lucy (Booth) Sykes are also given, another son Alexander is mentioned, and John is termed a brother of Beverly Sykes. His removal to the Western Waters is also precisely dated in Beverly Booth's comments. To this list of Richard and Rittah's children, we can also add one Jesse Sykes who lived in Prince George Co., VA per the census as late as 1830 and was born in the 1760s. He was a Revolutionary War pensioner by special act of Congress and his brother-in-law is identified in that material as Rev. Beverly Booth. My best guess is that Richard Sykes, Sr. was a son of the Richard Sykes who died in 1734 in Prince George County (first wife, Juliana) along with the Benjamin Sykes (d. 1801) who later ended up in Greensville Co., VA and perhaps a William Sykes in Southampton County. This finally unifies most all of the descendants of Bernard Sykes, the immigrant.
